Without a pre amp, can I hook up a cd player or any other sources straight to an amp? I thought I could do this with a amp that had before, but it had level adjusments on it. I have another amp I want to test, but it does not have level adjustments.

Thanks.

If your source has level controls, you can. If not, then it will only be playing at one constant volume which may or may not be too loud.

There are a few cd players that have a variable output control. One is the Carver SDA 490t. It can plugged directly into any amp and you can control the volume from the remote or on the face plate.

I don't know of any others, but I am sure this is not the only one.

Just remembered that the Carver TL 3200 and TL 3220 both have variable outs. Though you need the remote to use this feature.

I'm just wondering if it was possible. I got an old amp and I'm not sure if it works. This is just for testing purposes.

Depending on the output voltage of your source and the input sensitivity of your amp, it may not be a good idea. Do you have something with a variable out, such as a portable music player or computer you could hook it up to instead? You could also pick up a passive preamp.

That's how my 2 channel rig is running currently. My Cambridge Audio DVD89 universal player direct to my Adcom GFA-545. It's only temporary until I get a new pre-amp...but it's working fine. The Cambridge has a volume control, so I'm able to adjust it. It doesn't sound as good as it does with a pre, but it works for the time being.
