how did you fare with the rear brakes ?

Fine, the mechanic said that the DIY job I did was fine, but the rear calipers were rusted along with the e-brake cable.

That's why the e-brake was getting stuck and it was like driving with it on.

Ended up needing new rear calipers (the brake pads I installed were ok) and an e-brake cable. I think I can install the cable myself?

If he's going to be doing the calipers, the e-brake is going to have to be adjusted anyway. Especially if he is replacing the rotors. Might as well just have him do it so you don't have to take it back to have it adjusted properly. E-brakes on disc brakes can be a pain and alot of the Japanese car makers need special tools.

I know, he told me the e-brake needs to be adjusted anyway.

Oh I forgot to mention the e-brake cable is badly rusted. It doesn't work. That's why I am getting a new one :)

Top off during blizzard: Shiver and nod, hands may remain frozen to steering wheel

Living in Buffalo - My wife would shiver and nod with the soft top on!

+1 on the first response to the OP.....
    Get the years between 97 & 2005.

My wifes was an 1989 I think - and it rode rough - the seat was falling through the floor - and she LOVED it........but sold it when she moved to DC because she needed something reliable for beltway driving.......also her 4 cyl with a stick had a very hard time hitting 60mph.

She bought and sold this jeep for 900 dollars and put about $1500 into it to keep it running the 2 years she owned it.

Then why did you ask if you could install the cable yourself?

The answer is yes. It's just a cable. But if it's in the shop and he's going to be working on the cable system anyway, just have him replace it.

They usually come in several sections and usually only the last section needs to be replaced.

It'll probably be less labor for him to just junk the old rusted one and replace it than to fight with the junk one. Either way, if you do it or he does, it's gonna be time and money. He can get it done way faster than you can for a price but at least you won't have to spend hours **** with it in the street or your driveway. you can spend your time doing more productive things.
