Newbie needs help

Hey all,
I'm looking at buying a pair of TSi 200s for the front L/R of my setup but they're too tall for the shelves i want to put them on. I thought about going with the 100s because they would fit, but really like the fuller sound of the 200s. So my question is: would it hurt the sound quality, or the speakers to lay the 200s on their sides? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

    Well......we can probably find you a better alternative really. I mean, tsi 200 and 100 would surely be a day and night change for me. What are you planning on using the bookshelves for? (home theater or music) and about how much clearance do you have for your speakers on your shelves.

    I have seen some people lay their front channels on their sides due to space restraits, but don't know exactly how it affected the sound. I agree with kawi, that there would be a night and day diff. between the 200's and the 100's. Are stands an option, or some sort of shelf to support them? Can you "arrange" the shelves you want to put them on to allow for you to stand the 200's upright? There is a fairly sizeable diff. between the height of the 100's compared to the 200's, something like 4" I believe. Hopefully someone with experience in this matter will chime in with better advice.     hey nole, as suggested above - is there any available space on the floor for stands or even floorstanders like the 300's? yes- we want to spend your money :D I really don't have an honest answer as far as lying speakers on their side, but I'm sure someone here does. welcome to cp!

    I think the biggest problem with setting them on shelves is going to be keeping the tweeter at the level Polk's engineers designed it to run at least for h/t anyways. as for laying it on its side, I would think at higher volumes they would resonate like crazy, again thats not the way they were designed to be used.     Thanks to everyone for all the responses and the warm welcome. The speakers will go on a fixed shelf that can't be adjusted. The height of the shelf is 12". Also, it's a wall unit that takes up the entire wall so going with towers is not an option. The main use will be for movies. Here are my components:

    Sony 46" XBR4 LCD
    Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray
    Sony DVP-CX995V 400 disc DVD changer
    Sony STR-DG600 Receiver
    Sony 5.1 home theater in a box speakers
    DirecTV HD DVR

    All are hooked up with HDMI to the TV and optical inputs to receiver since it doesn't have HDMI inputs.

    I've also found some pretty good deals for the Monitor series on-line and wonder if a pair of Monitor 40s would be just as good as TSi200s for much cheaper? Thanks again.

    If it were me I would go with the 40's up front 30's in the rear a cs2 center and a PSW110 sub. Just my 2 cents......Its fun spending other peoples money!:p

    You're right about the monitors being discontinued, i'm just not sure if the TSi series is the replacement and what improvements (if any) have been made. Unfortunately if i decide to buy the Monitor 40s it will have to be in blind faith and hope they sound as good as the TSi series.

    Thanks for all the help so far. I've decided to go with the TSi200s and lay them on their sides on my shelves. This raising another question i have. Because of the way my living room is set up (and the wife not wanting speakers hanging from the ceiling in her new living room) i have to use in-ceiling speakers for my surrounds. Has anyone had any experience with the RCi series in-ceilings? Are they timbre matched to the TSi200s? Thanks again.

    The now "old" monitor line is usually described as highly underrated... And for the current sale prices I don't think you can beat them.

    +1000, I couldn't agree more, grab the Monitors while you still can. For the price, they can't be beat, IMHO.
