I think the question of lossless may be a little bit controversial......you might try starting a benign cable thread.....

I don't know about high-end, but I bet you can't hear the difference from the tiny stock speakers that are stuck to the sides of their TV that most people use.

Lossless sound will prove big if we get Audio Blu-rays or BD-AUDIO like we have some DVD-Audio? BUt as dkmuch points out...you'll still need good amplification and quality SPEAKERS.

For example, you'd be hard-pressed to hear much of a difference between Dolby TRU-HD and Dolby Digital 5.1 on a HTIB?

Im still undecided about the whole BluRay thing, dont get me wrong, I can tell a difference in the pic quality, but upconverted DVD's look pretty good IMO. The price really needs to fall on BluRay movies.

I was of the same thinking until last weekend;). Most of the concert dvd's on Amazon are around $18+, not that much more than sdvd.

Ofcourse, my opinion might change back IF the hdmi cable I'm waiting on doesn't fix my compatability issue:mad:

Yeah your right about that, I guess Im mostly referring to new movie releases, I want to see them fall into the $15.00 price range for the first couple of days, then they can jack it back up.:p Good luck with the cable issue.

That's only on the titles that are actually encoded in 7.1.

As far as I know, the majority of Blu-ray titles are still in 5.1...with the surround back channels matrixed in.

Do we need high end gear to hear the difference? Yes. IMO.

I would have to guess that even the new lossless codecs are going to sound far better on a well thought out system than a crappy HTIB.

I would imagine your equipment would have to be a similar quality to hear the difference between 128k encoded MP3's and a decent CD or SACD....

If a well ripped MP3 sounds about the same to you as a CD - I am guessing DTS or DD vs the lossless versions of those formats will sound about the same as well.....

I'm showing my ignorance here, but do certain frequencies get hit harder by compression than others?

Once you start getting into a larger image size the enhanced resolution starts to matter more and more. Just as the difference between 720p and 1080p cannot really be seen from normal distances until > 42" screen, the difference between BD and a good upconverted DVD is more prominent as the screen gets larger.

Well said......Also Curt is exactly right, even with my system I hear much more of the soundtrack in any given movie than my friends who still use htib equip, even my cocky neighbor with his Bose agrees.:D

People are too cheap to spend $30.00 on a Blu-ray movie but they'll spend thosands on speakers.

I have about 75 blu ray movies and haven't paid more than $20 for one of them. The PQ and SQ is far better than the SD-DVDs upconverted. I've gotten so spoiled with blu-rays that when I go to Blockbuster to rent a movie and they only have the SD-DVD available I usually walk out empty handed.

+1! I paid $25 @ BB for the Jeff Beck BRD, and it was worth it! BUT, I'll probably do 90% of my shopping @ Amazon from now on.

$30? Where do you guys go to buy new releases at $30? Amazon hasn't had new releases for 30 bucks for years...(just released Watchmen is only $20 and change at Amazon)

Just buy online or at a B&M like Frys and you can pick up great deals in the $10-$15 range. Just go to blu-ray.com and click on the deals links on the right to see tons of blu-rays at super discount prices on Amazon. The top link tracks the price drops hourly so you can see dozens of new bargain bin (but top tier quality releases) discounted every week if not every day. The top page of the best deals link has Casino Royale for $11.99, Quantum of Solace for $15.49, 2001: A Space Odyssey for $9.99, Transformers for $16.49, etc. and this is only a sampling of hundreds of available content under 20 bucks that fluctuates and changes every week at Amazon.

If it's price that you're worried about...just wait a bit...after BDPs get to 99 dollars...and they ARE THERE already for brand-X....the discs will follow suit.

    Within a year they'll be at half-price!
