I have a Yamaha 400TTU turntable which currently has a P-MOUNT cartridge...can I just remove the actual P-MOUNT shell and install a new Shure M97xE cartridge directly onto the phono arm? These seems to be a good deal now at Amazon.com...
please advise

No, but there are (still) a couple of good cartridges available in the P-mount format.
I like the "Grado sound", so I would suggest a Grado Black. Last I knew, this was still available in P-mount as well as standard 1/2-inch mount formats.
Elusive Disk (e.g.) lists it for 60 smackers: http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=GRAPRE1BK
(note that their photo shows the standard mount, though!)
For illustrative purposes, here's a picture of a P-mount Grado Black from LPGear.
(note that I've never purchased from either vendor)

Audio Technnica and other vendors (Ortofon?) still offer P-mounts. -
No way Jose! You need a P-mount cart.
Here a link to lot's of them including the Grado Black.

Thanks guys....the Grado Black it is. 60.00 is what I was looking to spend anyways.
How about a recommendation on RCA-type IC's to go with this...I tried my AQ Sidewinders once but they sounded pretty "thin".... -
+1 on the Signal Cables.

The Grados have a kind of "lush", warm-ish sound which I find quite beguiling. I've used Grado cartridges since the 1970s; great with Polk "Monitor Series" loudspeakers of the same era.
If you like the Shure, you'll probably like the Grado... I hope you don't get it, hate it, and blame us! :-)
