I use distilled water moistened on a Kimberly-Clark Precision Tissue 1-Ply Wipe
if exceptionally dirty... soap (I like palmolive) and water.
carefully and slowly -
forgot to add for stuff that you can not dust off with a light brush or compressed air
-
Windex applied to a soft lintless cloth, then clean away.

That's going to give you the best results in my experience.
Spray about 8-9 squirts of Windex onto the cloth for each driver...and wipe in a circular motion. Don't put too much pressure on the drivers though.
The drivers in the vintage Monitors have a somewhat tacky/sticky feeling by their nature, so don't try to get all of the stickiness off.The nirvana inducer-

Thanks alot guys, I didn't want to try windex right away, for fear of ruinning these speakers.

I thought the same thing a couple of years ago , got the same answer from the same people Windex is like a miracle cleaner for these...how it cleans them so well and the drivers still retain their tackiness after cleaning is awesome. The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -

I would love to see this as a testimonial advertisement for any cleaning product!
Such as:
"My collection of commemorative plates was looking a bit, well, you know, a little too "elegant". So I tried Cleen-Ex and all their original tackiness was restored. Cleen-Ex is like a miracle!!!"

Yes...don't use it on the cabinets.
Don't use it on the tweeters either. I doubt that you were going to in either case...but that would be some bad juju. The nirvana inducer-

So I wanted to bring this thread up for a few reasons.
I've seen several people join the forum shortly after acquiring either a pair of old monitor or sda speakers. I know, I'm one of them (got my SDA's 2 months ago)!
Anyway it wasn't until today that I wanted to clean them up and I recall the mention of using Windex. So I up and grabbed a microfiber cloth since I've got a million of them (I own lots of sunglasses) and began cleaning. Wow, they look so new....I was even able to get rid of the single-finger print on the passive radiator that I had left when I did the seal-test. I love having the grills off when listening to music, but I hate when dust lands on the drivers and sticks to them. Think I'll invest in some acoustically transparent cloth, but that doesn't mean I won't take the grills off from time to time. So if you're looking to clean those drivers or P.R.'s, grab that bottle (and no not the J.D.) and lint-free cloth and get to it!
I started to smell something familiar, something like pizza and then remembered that I have chicken cordon bleu in the oven! :D:DTruck setup

Just picked up a pair of vintage 7B's today. So Windex is the miracle cleaner, eh? I gota tell you guys, I'm a little reluctant to wipe the woofer and mid-range driver with a Windex moistened cloth. but it seems like y'all are saying this is aint going to hurt them. What about the tweeter? And what should I use for the wood panel the drivers and tweeter is mounted to?

Don't touch the tweeter."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

Don't worry I was a little worried as well. It worked so well, it was my reason for bringing up the thread again for other members to see. Congrats on your score btw! Don't touch that tweeter though with that stuff!Truck setup

So don't clean the tweeter, leave it dusty looking? What should I use for the wood panel the drivers and tweeter is mounted to?

Don't touch the tweeter.
Man, I see why. it looked like there was some deformity so I barely ran my finger over it, ever so slightly. It's very soft and easily moves with the slightest touch. I then remembered someone telling me it's going to have a small dimple in the middle, and sure enough it does. That was what I thought was the deformity but I guess it's normal. I aint touching it again, seems very fragile.
