Subwoofer, which one suits my needs....

Now it's time for a subwoofer. Looking to spend around 300 to 400 or so on one. Can go higher for a really nice deal though. I've been looking at the Psw505, Dsw Pro 600 (Polk Direct prices), MicroPro 1000 and 2000. These are the ones that I've had in mind. I have no problem buying refurbished. I kind of like the small form factor of the MicroPro's but not sure how they'll compare with the larger subs.

My room is 13x20 with the tv on the short wall. Will any of these subs be alright for this size room? There are 3 doorways in the room.

I found the Psw505 for 249.99 shipped. I don't know if this the best deal out of subs in my price range or not.

I have RtiA3's, Csi A4, Owm3s and a really crappy KLH sub that I'm using for now. It fills in the voids for movies for the time being. They are being powered with a Onkyo Tx-sr706.

As always, any help, questions, comments or concerns are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

When I was checking out subs for my "new sub that never happened" the DSW Pro 600 offered alot of bang for the buck, bet many owners can chime in and vouch for it. If you could afford a few hundred more bucks (like 150-200) you can pick yourself up a decent SVS, or a nice epic sentinel or something of the sort. Not sure about HSU's as I've never auditioned them but I hear alot of good things about them. Will you be using this sub mainly for HT?

For music get the micropro 2000 and movies I'd go with the DSW 600. Both can be had fairly cheap on Polk Direct. You're going to get more SPL's from the DSW 600 but it's not as musical as the fast MP2k

This is going to be used mostly for home theater. There will also be music played though it though. I would say 80/20 or higher for HT. I would like to make the budget a bit higher, but I have some other things going on right now. I think I'll be satisified with a sub in the range until the upgrade bug bites again. What I have now is about 1000+ times better than that bose acoustimass system I had 6 months ago... Slowly but surely.

    Blose.....blah :p
Well, SVS owners will say you won't need to upgrade for a while once you get one, but imo if the bug does bite, I'd say just get another one of the same model/make.

I might actually get to listen to a SVS here in a couple of days. I found someone local who has one and is selling it. I'm not sure if it is priced right or not. It is a SVS PCU (that is what he told me on the phone, I'm assuming that it is a PC-Ultra), that was purchased 3 years ago. Says that it is in excellent condition and was used in a dedicated home theater room. He is asking $500 for it.

The questions is, if I want to go this route, is this a good deal for the subwoofer?

Don't buy one just yet...Save some more money and get a Sunfire True sub. You won't be dissapointed.

Go figure what was typed across my keyboard again. I will keep with my guns and go with what I think is one of the best subs made. Got to love a 2700 watt sub.

I found it for $250 using www.bing.com. I don't remember what site came up with it.

Planning on giving the SVS a listen tomorrow evening. If it's worth the asking price, I'm thinking of going that route.

Well it's a 16" cylinder that's 46" tall, but it's by far the best sub you've got listed. $500 is fair, I've seen them go for more. If you can swing the size and look, I doubt if you'll be leaving without it.

Yeah, I'll see how it looks when I get there. Not sure if the cylinder style is great for me, but I might think completely differently when I get there and see it. I've never seen a SVS cylinder sub in person. I know it's the best sub that I've shown any interest in so far. If $500 is a fair price, I will prolly be the owner of an SVS tomorrow evening.

I owned a 20-39 Plus. It's unobtrusive if it's behind something. Works great in a corner. The old Ultra is a better sub than the Plus which I sold here for more than you're considering. For HT, you're not going to do better for $500.

So, for 500 bucks, is the PC-Ultra going to give me a pretty decent 'bang' for the price?

I've read to many good comments/recommendations for the SVS subs, I don't know if I'll be able to pass it up.

Out of every thing spoke about here the SVS PCU is the one to go with. I don't think you can touch a new sub for $500 that is going to best it unless you build your own.

Not the sexiest looking thing (IMO) but if you don't have a significant other to please then by all means go for it.

I just under 3 hours you could have a Sunfire True Sub MKII. Going price right now is 406.99. I was going to put a $500 bid on it but I had to buy a chain saw over the weekend and that killed my funds:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170362624951

I would be very suprised if it went over $500. It could but there are several out on ebay right now.

I might also look into a Sunfire Sub also, but I need to see what this SVS cylinder looks like. I might love it, or hate it. Won't know till i see it. The $500 is at the upper threshold of my budget for a sub. So far, it looks like it is my best option for a sub at this price range. It is still hooked up, so I will be able to listen to it also tonight.

Except for the "Not the sexiest looking thing" comments above I would say they have summed it up pretty good. Looks being a personal thing I kind of like the looks of the cylinder design and feel because the box volume is vertical it is very versatile in placement options.

Yeah, it is definently one 'large' cylinder of a subwoofer, but for getting it for $375 bucks, I really can't complain. One hell of a deal. Will have to play with some setting here sometime, but it is hooked up, and all I can say is WOW.. What have I been missing? Sounds absolutely great so far.

Well, even though I have not had time to calibrate the sub, or much else. I jsut hooked it up with the settings the previous owner had on it, tuned with 1 port plug, etc and ran the Audessy on my 706. All I can say is wow. I was watching Kung Fu Panda the other night and there are a couple scenes in there that about knocked everything off my walls and I though the windows were gonna fall out. I am super happy so far, will be even more once I get it calibrated, and a longer sub cable to put it in the corner where I actually want it. Hats off to SVS, it is one nice sub.

Thanks for everyones help. I'm sure that I will be starting another thread whenever it comes to tuning the sub, since it will be a first for me.

Running it in 16hz tune with one port plugged is fine, just make sure the subsonic filter setting on the amp is at 16hz, not 25, 20 or 12. The Ultra is a great sounding sub and can do some real damage, as well as, sound very sweet when calibrated correctly.
