Welcome to CP.
180 is not a lot. For HT you're going to need more speakers...and a SUBWOOFER because the VM30s, though good, don't have a lot of 'bottom' end for LFE (home theater effects) and the booms and bangs you'll get from gaming on your XBOX.
I'd look for a used H/K 200 series or a Pioneer AVR...Your budget puts a crimp in getting pre-outs...so I'd check the used Harman Kardons first!
And get at least a PSW10 or something for that low end...

You're fine for now...then.
All you need is an AVR (receiver). Most will let you set up to run a 2.1 system which is what you currently have L/R and a sub.
I'd think about a Harman Kardon AVR 254 or last year's model. See if you can find a refurb, used...or a sale.

I will have 5.1 in a month or two...just need some help on any kind of receiver. I guess I am willing to pay a little more if I know the item I'm getting will provide quality sound.

What you want to do is listen to your basic AVRs, Pioneer, Onkyo, Denon, Harman Kardon, Yamaha. Consider getting one that has pre-outs so you can add greater amplification in the future. See which sound YOU prefer!
Here's a list to review
Denon AVR 2808/9
Harman Kardon AVR 254/354
Pioneer AVR 1018
Yamaha RX-V663/5
Onkyo TX-SR706/806
Someone was selling a Denon AVR on this site for about 550--that's a 1099 MSRP AVR? Most of these AVRs will run you 300 and up (probably closer to 500) if you can find a deal. All of them sell for more than 500 new.
