I grew up listening to Walter Cronkite deliver the news. To this day no one has filled his shoes.

RIP Walter, you will be missed.

truely a great man has died today. Few broadcasters have ever had the appeal that he did... everyone liked and believed what he was saying.

CBS TV did his obit today, it was sad yet very touching.. just to think of all the major, major news events in history he was "the" authority on.. good or bad... he was "uncle Walter" to many millions of viewers over his long career.
    PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

    REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

An icon in journalism. I remember the coverage of the JFK assassination and the early space launches like they were yesterday. As a kid, I always enjoyed watching the news with Walter.
    Sadly missed. RIP Mr. C.

I’m not old enough to remember Cronkite, but from what I’ve read and the footage I've seen, there is no way he would have stooped to the level of assclownery that's so prevalent in today's news environment. One can only hope that his death will create some sort of self-reflection on the part of the mainstream media, but I doubt it will.

I'm afraid that the standard that Walter set doesn't weigh heavily enough on the newscasters that practice the craft today. No matter what the felt about an issue or situation that he reported on, he never commented on it. He was a thoroughly professional deliverer of the news. He never confused commentary for factual reporting.

Well, for a little historical insight for the younger set, Walt gave us the nightly updates
on that long seige known as Viet Nam. LBJ (the president) was noted as saying when Cronkite came out against the war in Nam, "Well, if we lost Cronkite, we lost the war!"

That was the power of his nightly newscast that millions of Americans watched.
Have a safe journey home friend.
