I'm going to get my first SACD - DSOTM - any recommendations on a particular source to buy a copy?

Thanks!

You can still find this SACD amongst regular CDs at Best Buy and Walmart. Just make sure you get a Japanese pressing* (pressed by Sony) since the US pressing is (in)famous for developing cracks around the center hub.

*Look on the lower left of the back cover. Amongst all the language about the copyright this and that are words to the effect of "Made in Japan for Capital Records"....that's the Japanese SACD pressing. Otherwise the US pressing and the Japan pressing look the same from the outside.

So is the 'redbook' layer on the SACD as good or better than other available mixes - or is the main attraction for the 5.1 mix?

I read that there is another UK Harvest CD mix that is reputedly "the" benchmark for 2-channel.

Also, is the SACD the "30th Anniversary" edition - is that the edition I should look for?

Sorry for being picky - just want to make sure I get the right one the first time! :D

    Thanks!

The amazon price is reasonable. It is the 30th Anniversary re-mastered SACD MultiChannel you are looking for.

I own DSOTM and it's fun, but for a reference multichannel disk look up "Celebrating Weather Report", a Telarc disk, pristine recording, a gathering of world class jazz musicians covering some of WRs hits. It's available in both DVD A and SACD and usually you can find a copy at Frys. I find I take this disk to demo other's systems, it's awesome from top to (the very) bottom.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

Yes, the SACD is the "30th Anniversary Edition". It has an additional track at the beginning of the album, which makes for an excellent intro. It also has a TON of artwork inside of the booklet.

The Redbook layer on this CD is excellent too. It's much better than the other Redbook versions of DSOTM. I have several other versions of it, and this one trumps them all.

I wouldn't say that the main attraction is the 5.1 mix. It is damn good, probably the best multi-channel mix I've ever heard, but the 2 channel SACD's where it's at for me.

+1 on Danny Tse's comment. Try to find a Japanese pressing if you can. The American ones are very prone to cracking around the center ring.

I got my copy of DSOTM on SACD and gave it a spin this afternoon in my Oppo-83.

    OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reference level listening for multitrack layer - LEDs on the Carver dancing up and down, the Epik Valor pumping out clean low bass I never knew existed....

Layers and layers of nuanced sounds I've never heard before.

I cried, I laughed...the musical genious of this album was great to experience in SACD glory - my rig just barely able to do it justice.

    Wow....I'm spent. :p

DSOTM is a damn fine example of what the SACD format is really capable of. It's an amazing sounding album.

My teenage son came in and had his fingers in his ears and was mouthing..."too loud, dad".

HA.....it was sweet, clean, clear, musical sonic goodness!!!!!

I also got the Allman Bros Eat a Peach on SACD - that is next.

I can see where my paychecks are going.....:D

Your teenage son thought it was too loud?...lol

Damn...when I was a teenager, there was no such thing as DSOTM being too loud.;)

Eat A Peach on SACD is another excellent one. Check out Live at Fillmore East on SACD too...another excellent example of the SACD format.

Careful on the reference level surround. I blew a surround speaker a couple of years ago on this SACD. That said this is probably the finest surround disk made but close 2nds are Wish You Were Here and The Blue Man Group's The Complex. Porcupine Tree has several DVD-audio surround releases that are outstanding as well.

+10 on the "Wish You Were Here" SACD. And then I'll give a thumbs up to Donald Fagans "Morph the Cat" DVD-A for best of studio and re-mastering production.

The Complex is a sub crusher. Agree on PT surround disks...favorites are Stupid Dream, In Absentia and Deadwing...they get heavier moving towards prog/metal as you go, but there's a ton of PF influence and they're songwriting and musical ability is topnotch...also their surround mixes are award winning...as good as DSOTM arguably.

    Really....when was this released?

Btw, Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms" is another "must have" SACD.

Since when is Wish You Were Here available on SACD?

    Not in 2009, according to a September 4, 2009 update at brain-damage.co.uk
One of the most anticipated releases, that is still not on a confirmed release footing, is the multi-channel version, possibly Super Audio CD (SACD), of Wish You Were Here. This has been promised for some time, and indeed, in Storm Thorgerson's latest edition of Mind Over Matter, he showcases the artwork for the release which he states "is due in February 2008", which clearly didn't happen! In an interview with David Gilmour published in September 2008 he confirmed that work was still ongoing on the release. At the current time we understand that it is unlikely to receive a release this year. As and when we hear anything else, we will update this page.

I'm going to crunch some numbers tonight to see where SACD is heading for 2009. I don't think the surviving members of Pink Floyd will sit on the work already done on WYWH. Perhaps they will decide to go with releasing the hi-rez version of WYWH on Blu-ray instead of SACD. However, if I were to decide, the backward compatibility of hybrid SACD will insure more sales.

Because of this thread I ordered Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall from Amazon. I haven't listened to them since I gave away all my albums and turntable in the early 80s, so hopefully I will be able to sit through an entire CD. I do have 3 copies of DSOTM (CD, Gold CD, SACD). Of course, I did have to order a couple more Blurays while I was Amazon.

Effing amazon. I just checked to see why my SACD's of Roxy Music -avalon, Carol King - Tapestry and Big Star #1/Radio City hadn't arrived yet. Found out that they won't ship for about two weeks.

So I bought Brothers in Arms and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

    That'll teach those....

    wait...

    what?

Update on multi-channel surround version of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were here"....

Over at stevehoffman.tv, there's a mention that Chad Kassem, owner of Acoustic Sounds, an e-tailer of audiophile software/hardware, has listened to a 5.1 version of "Wish You Were Here" at a studio and it was very good. Details are sketchy.

Just in case anyone wants a fix of multi-channel Pink Floyd rumors.
