As mentioned in another thread, I am going to try a pair of Gallos.

Before I heard them and and decided to give them a try, my plan was to send my MMG's to have them modded by Peter Gunn. In a nutshell, he modifies the crossover (I know, I could do that myself), and removes the MDF frame making a wood frame in its place. Apparently this simple change has a positive impact in vibration dissipation, which is the backbone of a better sounding Maggie, and makes them a hard to beat speaker. Of course all this is just what I've read in a few forums, but the truth is I have never seen a P. Gunn modded Maggie for sale.

Anyway, I decided to email him saying that I might sell the MMG's. I thought it was the right thing to do, given that he has me in line to do my speakers in October and I didn't want to be the cause of a potential empty spot in his schedule.

Here's his response:

"Hi

You are free to do as you like but IMHO you'll be making the biggest audio mistake of your life. I had a guy who compared my modded SMGa's against the top of the line Gallos and he said the maggies killed them, it wasn't even close. The MMG's are even better.

I know this may be hard to believe when listening to the MMG's stock, because stock they frankly have a lot of problems, and that's being kind. Once modded however there will be no more "sweet spot" and their dynamics will be as good as the best electrostats, with the kind of imaging only maggies can do, only better. With a quality sub system I know they are as good as 3's, as far as musical fulfilment goes.

Tell you what. Stay where you are and go thru with the mod. If it's not what I say and more when you get them back I'll refund your money and buy the MMG's off you for $375 and I'll use them for my demo pair. Since they might wind up being mine I'll even use fancier wood at a cheaper cost for you as well. That's how sure I am about it. All you risk is shipping.

Audiophiles are always looking at other speakers because they are inwardly never satisfied with what they have. It's a permanent 7 year itch, and my biggest problem because of the length of my work queue is that until I can get to you guys and mod your gear sometimes you've scratched so much you're off on some other tangent and no longer care. I even once wrote one guy with his work date and he replied "Huh... what...oh that. Sorry, but I sold my maggies 3 months ago...."

Ask yourself this, do you ever see any of my customers, even one, selling their modded maggies and looking for something else? It doesn't happen, and it doesn't because it's a game ending decision. My mod cures this itch for good. Do you even see people who DIY copy my work say "I'm tired of it and changed." That doesn't happen either, and in audio, that's literally unheard of, but that's how good it is.

So I hope you can apply some ointment to your itch and get your mind on something else for now. October will be here before you know it, however whatever you decide my best to you, just keep me posted on your decision.

PG"

I think I might as well take his offer. As he says, all I am risking is shipping.

I'd love to get my ears on a modded pair of silly panels.

    I beg to differ. I've owned SDA's since 1989.

Ricardo, take the man up on his offer, not much to lose.

George, I am getting the Gallos, and will go ahead modding the MMG's; if I decide the MMG's are not good enough, he'll take them back.

I think that is a good move Ricardo. Nothing better than someone who stands behind their work. Good luck and interested in hearing your updates.

Hopefully you'll like them as much as he does!
