Speaker settings at the Onkyo 600 AV receiver level
What should be my Onkyo 600 AV receiver volume settings for the invidivual speakers, ie. -12 to +12? Any thoughts on the distance other the actual distances?
The AV receiver volume settings on the -12 to +12 range are as follows to allow the back speakers to be over powered by the front. Should I lower the fronts to 0 and the backs to -8? Would that be better and from what I am reading it would be better because the 0 and -8 settings at the AV receiver level would provide less distortion?
Onkyo 600 AV receivers - internal volume settings for speakers
Front Center- AKA "BIG BOY" - set to 4
Front L/R - set to 4
Back Center - set to 12
Back L/R - set to 12.
Subwoofer - set to 0
Speaker wire is 14 gauge at 8 foot lengths for the front three speakers and 28 feet lengths for the rear three speakers. Polk PSW303 subwoofer connected to LFE with 15 foot monster cable.
Onkyo 600 AV receiver - internal distance settings for speakers
Front Center- AKA "BIG BOY" - set to 6 feet
Front L/R - set to 7 feet
Back Center - set to 3 feet
Back L/R - set to 3 feet
My open listening area is an apartment living room with front to back wall distance of 12 feet and left to right wall distance of 18 feet. Entrance is a door on the far left of the front wall.
Moving to the far right 12 foot (living room depth) wall with the right side of theater system with front right speaker in the front right corner and surround right in the back right corner.
Moving to the left we have the 20" Sony Trinitron with "Big Boy" atop.
The front speakers (raised on 15" stands) are 7 feet apart with each speaker 18 inches from the television. No more room with the computer desk to the far left and the wall to the right.
The rear surrounds "Polk 30s" are 5 feet apart are on shelves to bring their tops to 6 feet high.
The rear center (Interlude IL25C) is a last years model purchased for $179 from CC. It is set on a book shelf between the R30s rear surrounds at a similar heighth of 6 feet.
Subwoofer is between the left front speaker and the TV stand.

To the left of the rectangular listening area (12' depth x 18' wide) there is an open kitchenette all the way left on the back wall 6 feet wide to the kitchenette which goes 10 feet deep.
I have measured my speakers to the listening position and set the AV receiver accordingly.
The AV receiver volume settings on the -12 to +12 range are as follows to allow hearing the back speakers. Should I lower the fronts to 0 and the backs to -8? Would that be better and from what I am reading it would because the 0 and -8 settings at the AV receiver level would provide less distortion?
Thanks for all the good information from this fantastic form.

Ben,
Where in WA are you? I also have the Onkyo 600. Just curious. -
Ben:
Nothing like the Polk Forum subwoofer setup, ie LFE ouput with monster cable, all speakers set to small, and the subwoofer's internal filter bypassed and the use of the receiver's filter at 80 Hz per the doctor. I have a toggle switch on the back to my Velodyne that automatically bypasses the subwoofers internal crossovers. Otherwise, I had turned up my previous subwoofer's internal low crossover all the way up to avoid double filtering.
Olympia to be SPECIFIC.
My new Onkyo 600 settings are
Volume and distance settings for individual speaker levels on the Onkyo 600 per (-12 to +12 volume range)
Front L/R - (-2)
distance 6'
Center - (0)
distance 6'
Back Center - (0)
distance 3'
Suround L/R - (0)
distance 3'
The Velodyne seems to have made a speaker volume and bass blending possible for my system that was not happening with my previous subwoofer.
This forum has assisted in improving my home theater setup in ways I had not imagined were possible! Let's ride the waves!
I still need to get an SPL."Time will tell the tale"
