Now that's a nice starter table. I've got a PL-512 I found at a garage sale for $5.00 kicking around here someplace but the 516 is much nicer. Your Shure cartridge will work very nice on it. Good price for a decent working good Pioneer as well. So first thing after cleaning and cartridge mounting (be very picky on alignment) level the table in it's final resting place. Then, balance the arm, set the free moving dial to zero, then dial up your desired tracking force and set anti-skate to similar. You can play with the tracking force up and down until it sounds good. Some cartridges if the force is too light you get a lot of sibilance (splashy sounding treble) too much force and the bass is too boomy. Use your ears and you'll find the place that pleases you. Good luck and congrats. Now the obsession to find good vinyl begins!!! For me..February 2008...no records....July 2009...over 1500.

I like the M97xe; put one on a (nice) dump find Pioneer PL-12D (entry level tt) for our daughter years ago and it still serves well. FWIW, I've never cared for the affordable Audio Technica cartridges -- there's an edginess to them that I just don't care for.

The PL-516 is a very decent starting point I'd say. Are the feet intact? They tend not to be after all these years...
