I understand it's not full HD, but is it still in a widescreen format on widescreen TVs? Does the component cable make a difference?

yes component changes resolution from 480i to 480p

Your tv or avr can do a way better job upscaling a 480p signal

trust me its way better I do this myself

set the widescreen option on the wii , it is a true widescreen signal

if you hook up via component to avr and avr out using hdmi connected to your tv via hdmi. Wii resolution will be 480p and screen will shake a little. so itd be better direct hook wii to tv.

Mine is hooked up through avr, component=>hdmi, and I have never had any shaking issues.

Well I decided to pick one up on the way home tonight.

I got the console, component cable set, extra controller and Tiger Woods 2010 with the new motion thingy.

I'm now a happy wii owner and Best Buy now has 400 dollars more than they did when I walked in there.

I have not tried anything else yet, but TW 10 is the ****!

TW 10 with the motionplus is THE way this game should be played. Hoping future games will be just as good.

I was just about to say: Go buy your component cable at monoprice and save yourself some money but it sounds like you got one already.

He's probably saying that the TV will do a better job of upscaling a 480P signal than a 480i signal...

Another question, hope it makes sense:

Pretty much every device out there has it's main purpose, and then some 'neat' extras. Is this true for the Wii, or is it pretty much just a gaming platform?

It's made by Nintendo, a pure gaming company. It really only serves one purpose, to play games.

It's easy to mod/hack, easy to use, and generally fun for the whole family.

I just wish it had HDMI and optical out. HDMI would actually be cheaper to implement than an analog solution.

I just got a Wii (again) last week. Bought it over a year ago and the gf and I hated it, it was so frustrating. Decided to give it another go, albeit much cheaper this time. Cost me over $500 last time with all the controllers, games, cables, etc. This time it only cost me the price of two controllers. Much cheaper so I don't feel so bad owning it. I just installed the homebrew channel which incidentally (unknown to me) soft-mods it.

I just wish Wii would support something better than 480p. I play LBP, then decide to switch over to some Mario Kart...it's like going from Polk to Bose.
I think Bananas are awesome fruit.

You should definitely pick up Mario Kart Wii. I heard Wii Sports Resorts is a good party game with your friends. I have yet to play it. Another old school game they brought back was "Punch-Out" I own that game as well. Very fun :)
