Me and wifey want to drive down to someplace warm (well, wifey does)....could be anywhere along the east coast....anybody have a connection to someplace we could rent right on the beach?
Or any suggestions on cheap but good hotels on the beach? Planning for the end of August.

Old Orchard Beach in Maine is pretty nice. I lived there all of last year. Shouldn't be too far away for you either. I lived in these condos www.grandvictorianwaterfront.com . They are available for summer rentals and are very nice and right on the beach and in the middle of town.
If you're looking for something cheaper you could always stay in a hotel in Biddeford (a crappy town nextdoor to OOB) and drive the 10 minutes to OOB to hang out there. You could also take a bus from Biddeford to OOB which makes much more sense as parking is insanely hard to come by and will set you back $10 at least if you can even find a spot. -

The Outer Banks, down in Buxton or Avon. Nice places for rent on the ocean, but behind the dunes. The houses are built high, so there's no problem seeing the water. Big beaches and the best part, not many people. Stop down at Bubba's for some damn good BBQ.Political Correctness'.........defined

Check out www.VRBO.com That's the site I use, and rent a condo or townhouse instead of a hotel, and it is always much nicer."They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

+1 for the Outer Banks and if you have a SUV definitely stay in the 4x4 beach area (Carova or Swan Beach). I have been there 5 times and can tell you there is no place like it
leaving the road and driving on the beach along side the Atlantic is just awesome. Wild horses in the morning BBQ on the beach and no crowds it just doesn't get any better.
Last year I went the last week of August house was 1 row back, 6 bedrooms, 6 bath, pool, hot tub, elevator, pool table and huge decks with incredible views for $2,100.Mitsubishi WD-73736

my vote for Outer Banks

+2 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina......I've been going to the northern Outer Banks for 20 years now. Usually we stay in Corolla, which is the northern most town......very quiet, not many people, and very clean. This year We're heading to the Southern Outer Banks to Emerald Isle, I've never been there but from what I hear it's beautiful.

Yep. Outer banks for sure. Head on down to Ocracoke.

Outer Banks is the best. Very peaceful.
You can also drive on the beach...just take some air out of your tires.
Killer fishing as well if you like to do that. -
Outer Banks for sure. I go every year and love it. If you want less expensive and a little more old school, stay in Nags Head,Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk area. If you want more expensive stay up in Duck,Corolla,Ocean Sands area. There is a ton to do,awesome food, very relaxing and not all commercialized like most beaches. A word of advice though, if you do stay here and decide to go to Ocracoke Island you have to take a ferry to get there (you take your car with you). My advice is to get there when they open or you will be waiting in line for up to an hour or longer.

Many many thanks guys....I'll do some research with the wifey and see what pans out.

Ok....Outer Banks it is. We figured we'd head down first to Virginia Beach, then work our way down to the Outer Banks. I noticed hwy 12 ends and then there are ferries to take to continue south. Is this a good idea? We want to head to Myrtle Beack too.
We have no itinerary, we're just gonna drive and see the sights and stay at hotel/motel or camp if necessary. We do not want to be tied down to one hotel for the week.
This is a kind of "go where the wind takes you" sort of trip. If you folks have any "MUST SEE" things in that area...please let me know.

I'd skip Myrtle Beach.....awful.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Never been there....can you fill me in on what's "awful" about it?

Just too many people and kind of a crappy town. Still cool for younger folks...
But the Outer Banks rules. -
Myrtle Beach, while your typical commerical beach resort, is a helluva lot nicer than that dump they call Virginia Beach. You'd never get me to go back there.
That said, the real Outer Banks does rule!Political Correctness'.........defined
