Separated tweeter seam in rt55i
One of the used RT55i's I bought has a separated tweeter seam along side the dome (very visible). How can I tell if there is more damage w/o replacing the tweeter first?
Secondly, would I be better off replacing both tweeters with something from the RTiXX line, instead of trying to find older RTXXi tweeters that might be more prone to age-related deaths.
thanks

what tweeter model number does the RT55i utilize ?

I've emailed CS to see what model number it is. The forum archive has several members calling the rt55i's tweeters 'SL6506' tri-lam tweeters, but one post mentions that Polk might have changed the part number.RT55i mains, CS400i center, FX300i surrounds, RTi15 rears, Energy S10.3 Sub, Onkyo 607 / PS3

They do not stock the Tri-lam tweeters. They will offer you the replacement silk tweeter. Your only option will be EBAY. Good luck with your search. Just pull the tweeter to make sure you are looking for the correct tweeter.

is there a recurring issue with Tri-lam and the silk design are more stable and reliable ?
just curious if there are any reasons. -
What's the difference in the RTXX and the RTXXi tweeters? Could a tweeter from the RTXX (no i) line fit the RTXXi line?RT55i mains, CS400i center, FX300i surrounds, RTi15 rears, Energy S10.3 Sub, Onkyo 607 / PS3

I'll try to post a picture later of the separation of the dome from the seam. But I've seen similar post, and the answer is -- it's too detailed to fix in a tweeter.
My Audyssey mic rejected both RT55i's. I assumed there must be an error with Audyssey. After about 3 hours of frustration, moving speakers around, moving the mic -- rewiring, rescrewing terminals, etc., I then read literally 100s of Audyssey posts around the web, and Audyssey is never wrong. Every thread that started out with my problem, ended up with something wrong with the speakers, not Audyssey.
So I took off the grills...
...and the tweeter dome was clearly separated from ring. The other tweeter looks fine, but the Audyssey still rejects it. Moving the mic right up to that speaker, will get Audyssey to recognize it, but not the one with the separated dome. Still Audyssey won't recognize the other one from a normal listening distance.
It wasn't and isn't that noticeable because the center carries a lot of the highs, and I've manually EQ'd the bass down and the mids and highs up in the fronts (Audyssey would override this if it ever accepts the speakers).
Still, to me I was never impressed with the RT55i's like a lot of polk folks here. So I'm hoping it's just the tweeters at this point.RT55i mains, CS400i center, FX300i surrounds, RTi15 rears, Energy S10.3 Sub, Onkyo 607 / PS3 -
I had this prob with my rt800's. After calling cs and finding out that new tweets were 70 a piece with the discount and free shipping, I decided to upgrade. Not work the cost to repair speaks that old. Replacing both tweets are recomminded.

I took off the jumpers and connected only the top post, and there is ZERO sound out of either speaker. First, I'm surprised they should half as good as they do with no tweeters at all.
Secondly, it's $$$ wasted on an ebay purchase last week. I've had zero use to recoup the investment over time.
They must have been overdriven, the cabinets and grills are pristine.
I should probably just toss them and start over.RT55i mains, CS400i center, FX300i surrounds, RTi15 rears, Energy S10.3 Sub, Onkyo 607 / PS3 -
The replacement tweeter, AFIK is the SL6511, but Polk c/s will be able to confirm this for you, with pricing. It will not be silver in color, like the originals, but I have not been able to notice a significant difference in the sound?
Edit: actually, that's probably the replacement for the RT55, and it may not be the same for the RT55i, so you might want to check.Alea jacta est!
