New subwoofer, suggestions?

So, I want to start getting suggestions on what I should look into for a new subwoofer. It'll be used 35% music/65% HT. What I've looked into so far are the SVS PB 12NSD, the SB 12 Plus, and Sunfire's HRS10. Ive heard a few Sunfires, not this one in particular so I was hoping some owners of this series would chime in and give me their thoughts. As far as the PB12 and SB12 plus, the pb12 seems like a better choice being a ported model, cheaper, and it dips down lower in regards to frequencies as opposed to the more powerful and more expensive sb 12 plus. I tossed Sunfire in there because from experience they seem to be very versatile subwoofers, and Ive found some online for around as much as an sb12 plus (nearly 650 if not less). Im setting my budget at no more than 700 (hoping no more than that with taxes that is). I have a medium sized room but will be moving into either a condo, if I remain in the Chicago area, or a house back in California, where Im originally from, that'll have a fairly nice sized living room. This subwoofer will be purchased either within a month or two but I don't think it's something to skimp out on or to just settle with as I'd like to do some homework and get what's best for me, thanks Club Polk!

Ah that's right, but tbh, I've never heard their line of subwoofers. I should check places out to audition some of these being in a big city, will just need to find the time to do so

I personally don't favor Polk for their subwoofers. For the price, you can get a much better unit from makers that specialize in only producing quality subs. Just my .02

If you end up living in a condo, Hsu VTF-1 mk. 2 might be a good choice.

Basically same as this previous model: http://mikeshea.net/lt/editorial_89.html

Yea, Ive been looking at HSU's as well but I want to audition them, never heard a subwoofer from their line either. The condo thing is a MAYBE, since my wife and I are only in Chicago so she can go to school here. Going back west seems like a likely choice given the taxes/cost of living out here/traffic and the fact that we're nowhere near the ocean. Currently in an apartment right now and the neighbors don't mind me at all having loud music/etc, sometimes theyll even come over too and watch movies with us. My 2 subwoofers are OK, but I would rather get a better performing sub, and cut down the space needed for these 2.

If you haven't heard the the DSW series from Polk than you are doing them an injustice. These subs are NOT in the same class as the PSW line. They are much much better. In a medium size room the DSW 500 will have everything rattling during an explosion!

Out west, are there any jobs out there? At least in Chicago you still have some reasonable employment figures. Unless you're in some iron-clad industry or business!

I'd vote for the SVS as well. But in a condo...NO!

    good luck

Cathy is right.. the new Polk series can compete with the big boys at this point. Sorry about the digression...just 'worried' about one of our own, I guess!

Haha its cool, Ive heard some of micro pro's and was pretty impressed by the output from such a small footprint. So if I'm looking at the other subs listed above, I should definitely check out the DSW series? Ill take your guys' word for it

polk audio is a really good company and has excellent National customer service.

It is worth checking out their subwoofer.

In the end it is your decision and choice that matters

I'd say that the DSW pro 600 can compete with most subs in its price range in a small to mid-sized room!

But some guys here are running systems in their basements (20 X20 or 20 X30) and in that space....you'd need MORE!

So I'm raising my budget for the sub around 800, having more than one bank account I haven't been keeping up to date on all of them day by day. Checking one of them I saw I have received a considerable amount, compensation if you will. I'm open to more recommendations on particular models, I'm hoping tomorrow I can find a few places to audition some epiks and sunfire series I'm interested in.

kawizx9r, if you are living in Chicago then you are not that far from where they make the Epics. I believe it is Crystal Lake Illinois. About a 1 hr drive from Chicago. Give them a call 815-447-2423. I say this because I have listened to the Epic dragon and WOW !!!!!!. That thing I swear was going below 20hz,rattling the walls and my bones. It was 600 amps(1500 peak) with a 18 inch driver. I tried picking it up and it was around 100ilbs.Built like fort knox but still compact considering the 18 inch driver. With music it was fast tight reponse,no distortion that I could here and in home theater, forget about it.Unbelievable! I thought Velodyne makes good subs but these blow them out of the water in my opinion. Give them a call and see where you can listen to them.I am sure they have something locally. Maybe they have something set up at the factory? I would consider them myself but they are out of my price range right now, The Dragon retails for $999 but the Vanquish and sentinal are $699 and $799 and US made and in my opinion a great value!
    Good luck!!

Yea, appreciate that. I'll give them a call tomorrow morning and see if I can audition some of these. My wife does insist I get rid of my other 2 subs BEFORE I get a new one, but that doesn't mean I can't go "window" shopping. Crystal lakes about 40 minutes or so from me so it's not bad at all, thanks again.

I'm a big fan of SVS subs, they make very good high quality subs that can compete with subs that are over $1000 more, a great bang for the buck. I've owned the SVS PB12 NSD, PB12 PLUS & PB12 ULTRA. I upgraded to the PB12 Ultra to fill my big 26x26 room. Any one of them will give you what you want depending on where you set it at. Don't want your neighbors to be bothered? Then just turn the volume knob down is all.

Well, this just in. I ran into an ad on craigslist, and he had a pair of SDA-1C's for sale ALONG WITH a timbre match center channel for my RT1000P's (if anyone else remembers me mentioning my center blew out and I needed a replacement). He happens to be a Polk club member and I'm purchasing his SDA's and CS350 from him, I love this forum! :D

Some nice speakers there Kawizx...and from another member....can't ask for more than that. I'm sure he'd let you drop in and take a listen?

    Good luck...

(comment on above Epic sub; an 18" sub is not going to be particularly 'musical' IMO--Velodyne also has an 18" based-sub with a lot more power...and a heftier price, if we want to compare apples to apples.)
