Would 'mo gain (x7's) make a volume difference in a preamp?

A 12AX7 has a gain factor of 100, while a 12AU7's gain factor is 20...not even close. Besides that little issue, the anode current and grid voltage are very different. Therefore, 99% of the time they are not interchangeable and will cause bad juju to happen to your gear.
