Leaving for an Alaska cruise next week! :D

Any advice on places to visit/eat in Juneau or Skagway? We've booked the White Pass railway for Skagway and plan to walk around the town.

Not sure what's must see in Juneau though.

The kids don't know yet. Funny thing is the kid's fortune cookies last night mentioned "Boats and water in their future". And yes, I use the numbers to by lotto tickets. ;)

regards

Dave

I think that Captain has enough ego for 10-15 people.

We went up there last May for our 30th anniversary. I read about the road trip into the Yukon you can take from Skagway. Car rental place in Skagway...was GREAT! Cheaper than the railway and travel/see what you want. Both modes of travel have areas unique to them so I'm sure you will see scenes we could not....hope the weather is good for you!
We ate mostly on the ship but I highly suggest an Alaskan Amber Ale if you like beer. Have rain gear handy for Ketchikan if you go there...I think it rains almost every day! We did whale watching in Juneau on a beautiful sunny day.

Just got back today from an 8 day cruise via the Inland Passage. Hit up Juneau for some white water rafting, next was Skagway for a trip into the Yukon via train and then back down via bus, next was Glacier Bay for a day and then Ketchikan.

Got to see a Killer Whale jump completely out of the water right off the port side of the ship (that was breath taking), got to see a lot more whales, brown and black bears, sea lions, seals and otters along with lots or bald eagles and mountain goats.

I'm sitting here now feeling like I'm still on the ship, haven't quite got my land legs back yet. All-n-all a 10 day, 4,200+ round trip via sea, land and air. The weather was perfect, no rain, sunny skies with temps in the mid-60's to low 70's the entire time. It was perfect!

    Phone,
Enjoy yourself on the cruise. If you are a seafood nut, and with you living in BC that is a strong possibility, you really can't go wrong.
Almost every restaurant, bar, or hole in the wall will be serving some of the best seafood you will ever have.
Halibut and salmon, (and none of that farmed crap) are in season, and should be fresh off the boats the day you eat it. Crab, shrimp and clams should still be shedding salt water when they take your order.
The Alaska Brewing Company (based in Juneau) makes a boat load of excellent beers and most if not all will have it on tap.
Don't be looking for a 5-star restaurant, there aren't any that I know of, but ask the locals and have a great time.
    Hope the weather holds,
    Nathan

Enjoyed the cruise although it wasn't nearly as restfully as I naively thought it was going to be. Two children racing around the deck can be quiet... un-restful... ;).

A quick pic from the cruise. Some more later.

    Thanks everyone.

Make sure to give a report when you get back. The wife and I are going next summer and want to get the most bang for our buck.

We're still sorting through the pictures but I'd thought I'd post one of my daughter. The Polk-family hasn't seen her since her baby pictures so maybe you'd like to see how she's grown.
