No video. No multi-channel surround sound....which is why I put this thread here. The Onkyo SACD/CD player is now having pre-orders taken thru J&R for $499.00.

Onkyo CSVL5 SACD/CD player

Amazon.com is also taking pre-orders at same price, except it has pics of front/back and remote....

That's a nice price point with the Wolfson DACs! Should the Emotiva ((reference)) player be worried? Just jesting of course. I've always liked most of Onkyo's products and have owned more than a few of them....over the years.

Interesting piece. As long as it doesn't down-convert the DSD to PCM stuff it could be a winner...

It seems to have a "DSD Direct" mode

Still, at $499.00, it faces tough competition from the Oppo BDP-83, which is available now to everyone for $500.00....and the Oppo definitely can do both DSD to analog and DSD to HDMI without any conversion.

Interesting...I'm going to be in the market for a dedicated SACD/Redbook player pretty soon. That's the approximate price range I'm going to be looking in too. I'll have to keep this one on the list.

I wonder why they don't have this listed on the Onkyo site...I checked OnkyoPro's site too...nothing on there either.

Is this a replacement player for the onkyo 7555. It is also a very nice player. What are the differences?

I don't know if it's a replacement for the DX7555 or not. My guess is that it is. I have the 7555 myself. It is strictly a CD player - no SACD.

Onkyo is tough to beat when it comes to value, imho.

I would not recommend buying anything from J&R Music World. They used to have a phenomenal music selection but be careful of audio/video purchases.
I work a few blocks from their main HQ and I can tell you they are they’ll do a “CSI” on returns. At their store, customers returning items are directed to the basement and take a number like your waiting in the doctor’s office. They have plenty of chairs for you to wait and watch a little TV while they play detectives and meticulously inspect ALL returns. I had about 3 other people ahead of me for a 45 minute wait.
The prices are inflated and they know nothing! When I started out less than a year ago, I purchase two Polk products from them that were not the best match for what I wanted this is before I discovered the Polk Forum.
Sorry for jackin’ but do we have a thread that members review audio sellers?
I guess I should of asked before I jacked. :D

That may be true for returns....and I imagine that's done to protect themselves and the customers who will subsequently purchase the "open box" item.

My experience with shopping with them has been very positive (going back to the early 90s).

I've been thinking of getting an Onkyo DX7555 CD player. I wonder if it improves upon my Sony CD player from the early 90s.

I've bought a number of things from J&R, going back 25 years or so, and I've had nothing but the best experience with them. I have returned a few things and they never gave me any static. I too, imagine they have to be very careful with returns, which if you ever buy any "open box" or refurbished items, you should be glad of!

Very understandable so far as being careful with returns. I've been purchasing from J&R probably since 1987, i only did records back then but I did know a lot of folks purchased stereo stuff with satifaction. I've returned stuff under normal conditions as well. I'm just saying that they have changed. I have no problem with a merchant scrutinizing a return for abuse, but I can tell the difference when a merchant is being a jerk. This is my issue. I'm not telling you Not to shop there if you find what you want, but I just think they are bustin' balls to discourage any returns. If you find what you want, cool. Perhaps it is different for online purchase? I've only purchased at their HQ. I actually prefer Amazon for online because I've never had a problem with a return. To each is own. Peace.

I've never had a problem with J&R. They ship within 24 hours, always double boxed and packed well. They even double boxed a sub I purchased a couple of years ago.

I will surely be keeping an eye out for reviews of this player. this could be a solid edition. I am starting to get into sacd, but have hesitated because of the cost of such players.

So is it compatible with American electrical outlets? They don't have it listed on the Onkyo America page.

I definitely like it's price tag...the features seem to be pretty solid. The Wolfson DAC's are supposed to be really good.

I'm going to be in the market for a CDP before too long...this is on the potential list now.

I'm looking forward to hearing some reviews/feedback of it.

The C-S5VL has finally showed up on the American Onkyo page. Check it out. They've got pictures and tech. specs up and all.

It looks like it's going to be a pretty damn solid SACD player. It's definitely going to be one of the CDP's near the top of my list when I'm finally in the market for a dedicated SACD player.

Wolfson 192 khz/ 24 bit DAC's, the Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry...Looks like the output voltage is 2.0 over analog

A headphone jack with a built in volume control is a very nice touch too.

It only weighs 9.9 lbs...Seems like it's a bit on the light side. I wonder how prone they'll be to resonance due to not being solid enough. Probably a good candidate for some Dynamating on the internals.

Amazon is almost sold out, but no reviews yet. Maybe buyers are all too busy listening.

I don't know what to make of the specs, but the S/N ratio is a bit higher for CD than SACD. 114 db to 110. That's a bit odd, isn't it?
