Free Web Hosting?

Is there such thing as free web hosting? I have used hosting services in the past that require you to have www.mywebsite.theircompanyname.com, but I am wondering if there is a company or site out there that just lets you register and host your website for free. Call me cheap, but a website is not in the budget right now, even though it will be in the future. Thanks friends! :)
