Getting back into it

So I have been out of HT for a little while. I sold my Yamaha receiver which only put out around 50-80 watts a channel. I still have my JBL center my polk monitor 40's and my psw10 sub. I have been playing around with car amps on the monitors and it seems that the more power I give them the better they sound! The bass seams to get tighter the highs get clearer. So I am looking to get a new receiver but I do not want to go dropping 500-1000 bucks. What are my options!

Depending on your price range which I'm assuming is less than $500, you may be better off looking for a high quality older used AVR, preferably with PRE-OUT's.

If looking for new, I don't think you'll find many great choices in the under $500 range that have pre-out's.

No matter what, More power is better, a seperate amp WILL sound better, and pre-out's are a must for future upgrades.

If you dont mind refurb, Harman Kardon ebay site has their HK 254 avr that sells from 210-240 plus shipping daily. I just got one myself, with shipping I spent 245, it is acting as my pre/pro to my seperate amp. I think its a great deal.

I don't know about Aim, I'm an old ****, But my computer won't recognize a new 1TB sata drive I'm trying to install into an MSI K8T NEO....MS6702 VER1, I'm wondering if the drive is too big.

I know this is old but I have 4 computers and this is the one my kids download all thier music on.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try an older Pioneer Elite or Denon high end model. For 300 bones, you should be able to get a really nice one on AGon or e-bay.
    Denon AVR-3600 or higher model
Maybe a Pioneer Elite VSX-55TXi or something like that.

That is what I would do. Hope you find one. Enjoy!

Hmm what operating system are you running? If it anything below windows XP than it will probably not recognize it either because it is not in the right partition or it is just to big.
I am not sure about the pioneers are they that good?

Pioneers are pretty good, the Elites that is. But that H/Kardon for less than 300 would do a college student fine...and it has pre-s and everything else you'll need for the future as well as a fairly nice warm sound.

You could always try the yamah rx-v659. It is about 350, 95-100 watts per 7 channels, and has pre-outs. I have it and I can't say I don't like it. It is a smaller receiver, but frankly your speakers do not need anything overbearing. I put an emotiva xpa-5 amp with it to beef up the power.
