Baseball Bats and.....

Its really screwed up that the powers to be in major league baseball have not addressed the problem with pieces of baseball bats flying around the field and in the stands. Everyone who follows the sport knows there is a tragedy in the making. When a fan or child gets impaled there will be a lot of people bitching and complaining. I guess the only ones to win when this happens are the lawyers. Maybe a little preventative maintenance here would save a family a lot of grief.
Also, My sons baseball team finished in first place after a long tough season. I am so very proud of him and his team. They may not of been the best but beat the so called "best' thanks to team spirit. The problem I have is that being a RED SOX fan its sad he always seems to get drafted to the Yankees

I don't thing such a thing has ever happened. Sadly it will take such an occurance before some things change.

can you imagine the complaints of the fans though of teams decided to place nets around the stands as they already do behind home plate

Adam Dunn is one of the good guys.

From Tom Boswell's column, this wonderful bit from Adam Dunn about why he switched from maple bats to ash:

Why switch? "Maple is too dangerous ... I switched last June," Dunn said. "Those bats shatter. One of them is going to end up sticking out of somebody's neck. Maybe [a fan] in the stands. I'm not being that guy that did it."

With those words, Dunn may be the first player in baseball who has rejected the lethal maple bats that are a tragedy waiting to happen. The whole sport knows it. It's being "studied."

"Using the ash probably does take away some homers, probably. If you don't quite get it, miss it a little, it doesn't go as far," said Dunn. "I'll take one, two, three less homers and not have my name on the barrel of the bat sticking in somebody. I saw a [shattered] bat go around an umpire's head last year."

Thank you jtgranby and Dunn is 100% correct. Where are the other players?
I know, they are over paid and under worked. The athletes back in the day in all sports are far superior to the sissy we have today.

Good on Dunn for choosing safety over stats.I'm not much of a ball fan anymore and was'nt aware of the maple bat issue. Is the use of maple a fairly recent thing?

Hopefully no one gets seriously hurt by a shattered bat before action is taken. The inevitable happened in an NHL game ,a young girl was struck in the head by a puck and died. After that almost overnight protective meshes were installed at both ends of NHL and minor hockey rinks all over North America.

My son has played little league baseball for about 9 years and ended up being drafted on to the Yankees probably 8 times.
Maybe we should move from New Jersey to Massachusetts.

Maybe it's a sign you should switch over to the home teams cheering ranks.Who knows you might get to liking wearing a pinstriped jersey with #13on it.

    I used to like you :mad::mad::mad: :rolleyes::rolleyes: :D
Thats not my style, not that I have much, but I'll never root for the Yankoff's.
Did you see the piece of the bat that almost hit Nick Green who's the shortstop for the best team in baseball? They have to do something to limit the bats breaking. I know its the maple bats much more so than ash so banning maple is a logical way to go. Maybe our woodman-Jesse can solve baseballs problem :)

I"m pretty sure that somewhere on the tickets or signs posted in the stadium, it states that you enter at your on risk. People get hit with foul balls and homers on a regular basis. I was watching a game last year when a women got hit square in the noggin with a broken bat. I doubt, other than her medical bill being paid, she had any case for a lawsuit.

Now if a player throws a bat into the stands out of frustration or anger, he'd be held responsible, not the club or MLB.

Another way to look at it is by looking at Rally car, Le Mans, etc, where the fans stand within a few feet of the cars at their own risk. It doesn't happen every race, but seems like just about every season, some idgit gets creamed by an out-of-control Rally car.

Well I agree with a lot of what has been said however when someone get impaled there will be a major league problem, how do you like that pun!!
Since MLB knows of the danger the maple bats create I'll bet lawyers will line up rather quickly when it happens. Limiting the chances of this happening makes total sense to me. It seems the commissioner of baseball, I think its Bud Selig, has no balls. He could easily fix the problem.

Couldn't they use a plastic shrink-wrap on the maple bats?

Maybe some cork like Sammy Sosa used would help. I'm sure him juicing and corking the bats had something to do with his bats breaking.
