Either one would be good. My choice would be the Pioneer. I have the Pioneer flagship model from 6 years ago and it is a powerful, easy to set up and nice looking piece of gear. The two channel sound is also excellent. It basically boils down to the type of sound that you like when you are choosing between the Onkyo and Pioneer. I would suggest listening to the two in a store if you can.

I own the SC-07 also, it is very good. Search the forum for "Icepower" or "SC-07" and you will find more than enough user reviews from the guys here also.

Renowilliams said it..."It basically boils down to the type of sound that you like when you are choosing between the Onkyo and Pioneer". The Onkyo and pioneer are good receivers but for 2 channel the pioneer is better to my ears. To yours it might not be.
you really have to find a dealer that has both and listen.

I know there are a lot of Pioneer fans in here, but it's what was said above. Two receivers will give you different sound. You'll have to pick, which sounds best for you, and which sounds best with your speakers. Both are excellent receivers.

Keep in mind that this is primarily an audio forum and many/most of the people who prefer the Pio would do so for the "sound." In other threads, I've commented that my Onk 875 purchase was motivated by video processing as well, an area where it excels. If your focus is audio alone, it is hard to explain spending that much money on an AVR and not merely going for separates. So, if you're buying an AVR and you care about video, then I would suggest you let your *eyes* and ears make the decision.

I myself am an Onkyo fan, I love my 806 and would recommend their AVR's to anybody. The 906 is a BEAST and at 54 lbs. and enough inputs and outputs to make the biggest speaker wire spaghetti you have ever seen, I would have a hard time believing it wouldn't be able to keep up with the SC-07. It also has the Burr Brown DAC's that were removed from my 806 (damn them) I have no doubt that the SC-07 is a solid unit as well, but like the last few people have said if you are going to spend that kind of cash on an AVR, you may have to find a way to demo both units before buying.

One of many many reasons why I went with 805 instead of 806, which got stripped out of many important features.

Got to go with ViperZ on this one and say LISTEN to both. They're both very good, but totally different sound!

The Pioneer has the class D signature sound..very very clean and neutral!

The Onkyo is not as clean but has a very pleasant and more laid back sound with better V processing as noted.

YOU NEED TO HEAR AND DECIDE!

I have an Onkyo 875, which made its way into my main rig solely for its HDMI capabilities. It replaced a Pioneer Elite VSX-37TX, which despite its age and alleged power shortcomings, sounds better to me, when using the internal amps on both.

If I had the opportunity and extra funds, I'd jump on a new (to me - refurb, used, don't care) Elite in a heartbeat.

Listen to both. Make your own decision.

I've heard both and I really do think this is a very 'subjective' area. In general the Onkyo 87X series were more powerful than most lower level Elites, if nothing else.

I know people in both camps...some swear by the Onk-s others love Elites?

I own a Pioneer SC-05 and it sounds very good, it's only my second reciever. I only use it for tv/sports, movies-dvd-bluray so now that you say the Onkyo has the edge on video picture quality, can you tell the difference between the two in the picture quality department? Did I waste my money on my reciever and should I have looked into one of the Onkyo recievers?

Also, how do the Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer all compare in picture quality for their middle of the range and top of line models?

    Digital,
I did not mean to imply that the Onky 875 has better video processing that the Pio because I have not compared the two. (I do know that, when it was the Onk was the new kid on the block it was considered to have top-notch video processing.) My point was that I would not judge an AVR on sound alone. If someone else wants to do that, then that's their right. To me, however, it seems unwise to ignore the video side of things and most of the responses to "which receiver is better?" do just that.

It is my understanding that the new Elites don't do much in the way of video processing and are mostly pass-through?

And yes, the Onkyos still have the thumbs up on V-processing--especially at the 900 level.

Thats my understanding as well cnh, but when you think about it why would they. Blue ray players already output 1080p anyway.

    DVI will output 1080i.

I think it depends on what your using the receiver for. Most receivers don't touch HDMI-based video so if you're primarily HDMI then you wouldn't consider video a feature that will ever be used. There is also the fact that CP is primarily an audio forum so you tend to get that perspective.

As for whether video processing is useful, I'm sure that some people do not care. If you play only Blu-ray and have HD, then I why you would not put much weight on the video. But I have enjoyed the video processing on my Onk tremendously over the past year that I've had it. The clarity of regular DVDs on my 5 yr old progressive dvd player are quite good thanks to the Onk's upscaling. In fact, I only recently bought a Blu-ray player and that was mostly to stream Netflix. The truth is that I find Blu-ray a bit of a let down because the Onk did such a good job of upscaling.
