Bought a Samsung BD1600 Blue Ray Player, and have a Samsung 72" wide screen DLP TV. When I play a disc, I have a bar on top and a bar on the bottom of the screen. I have the TV and the player set for widescreen. Is this normal for Blue Ray?? If it is, this really sucks.

Depends on what movie. What movie are you watching?

Your tv is 16:9 (1.85:1) ratio, which some movies are. Most movies are 2.35:1, which is much wider. To show it correctly, it will have black bars, this is normal.

To check if the player is set up correctly, remove the disc from it, and go into the setup menu. Make sure the screen type/size is set to Widescreen or 16:9, not 4:3 or Normal.

Also, are you using HDMI as your connection type?

Yes, it's normal. You should have picture size adjustments on the TV that will eliminate it, but it cuts a little of the picture off each side.

it's normal.. with so many widescreen formats.. even 16:9 LCD/plasma tv's don't format all movies correctly.. sucks assss. (it's not a problem with the TV's.. it's the studio's that release movies in many different formats.

Your not kidding it sucks. Spend all that cash on equipment, and you have to put up with that.

Yup, HDMI for conection. I bought the Grand Torino, and the Wrestler. Both of them had the black bars on top mand bottom. Both Tv and Blue Ray player are set to widescreen.

If you are a "typical" human, and are actually interested in the movie, then the black bars typically disappear from your sight.

Studies have proven that an average person's mind will "stretch" out the picture, so that the person no longer sees the black bars. Basically, the only way really be bothered by it is by conciously noticing it (by crying, for instance).

Just focus on and enjoy your movies, and you'll hardly even notice the bars!
Besides, if you have black bars then you can be sure you're seeing the movie how the director saw it, and therefor how he WANTS you to see it.

    Woodhead,

Sorry to see that you are not happy but how much time did you spend researching about HD, Blue-ray and movie aspect ratio's before you went out and plunked you $$$ down? I know that those numbers listed in the specifications are confusing but they are very important. Once again I am sorry to hear that you are not happy.

It's not just Blu-Ray, you get the same black bars with DVD's. It's been that way for a decade.

if you really hate it, hit zoom on your tv until it crops the sides off and makes the black bars disappear.
