So I picked up this re-mastered CD of Miles Davis' old band that reformed in the 70's consisting of Herbie Hancock on piano, Tony Williams on drums, Ron Carter on bass, Wayne Shorter on sax and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet (filling in for Miles who was retired at the time) VSOP stands for Very Special One night Performance, although they played many shows and released several live albums. Any jazz fan is already aware of these guys and their legendary status, I'm posting about this because this CD is incredible on several levels. Anyone who enjoys music and high fidelity recordings should get this CD, for no other reason than to show off how good your system can sound. This is not hyperbole, hands down this is far and away the best live album I have ever heard and is one of best recordings I have had the pleasure of playing on my system. This CD knocked me on my a$$! The stand up bass is so thick and real that I had to take a double and triple take at my speakers. The drums are out of this world. Tony Williams was a ridiculous drummer, he has since passed away. He is showcased here in a big way. His bass drum hits are palpable to the point that my GF in the other room asked me “what the hell was going on in there?!” I could go on and on about this album but the one point I want to get across is that non-jazz fans should give this a try. You may not be into everything on it, but the musicianship and the quality of the recording will be appreciated by any audiophile. The CD is listed as Herbie Hancock - V.S.O.P. as I believe he was the band leader.

Since you have an Oppo 980, I hope you are aware the "Herbie Hancock - VSOP" is available as a SACD.

I was planning on getting that on LP when I had the chance, didn't realize it was out on SACD. I will have to check it out. To my knowledge the "Live Under the Sky" CD I was talking about above is not available on SACD at this point.

I'm gonna pick this one up.
I scored a live V.S.O.P LP from our very own George. Pretty good condition, it was a date these guys did in NYC .

Newsflash fellows. This forum is a jazz wasteland. The best RECORDING of drums I've ever heard is Miles "Seven Steps to Heaven". Tony Williams on drums.

Freddie Hubbard kicked the bucket recently too.

That's it. Enough discussion of real jazz here at Club Polk.

I just got a vinyl copy of Seven Steps to Heaven a couple of days ago. Williams is awesome to be sure, my personal fav studio album for him is Nefertiti, he's all over the place, not as well recorded but performance wise, off the charts. I didn't realize Club Polk was so Jazz unfriendly, maybe that can change... :)

Try Tony Williams on the entire E.S.P recording, George.

I have all the Tony Williams I need. I've been a fan since the early 70's.

Jazz does not exist at Club Polk.
