In 24 hours, I will be on flight to Vietnam, my 4th visit. My flight will be flying to Japan, before reaching the final destination, hope all goes well amid the tensions in that part of the world. I am all packed and ready to go. Damn this excitement!!

I will be taking a lot of pictures and recording a lot of videos. Every time I go back, the country changes for the better. I primarily stay in the south and have yet to venture to the north where the capital is. In Saigon, there is actually an american community, very interesting conversing with them. They live there now and their vietnamese is actually superior to mine. It is amazing how much the country could change within 10 years. I will try to post pictures throughout my stay and hopefully somehow get the videos on youtube. The video part maybe a challenge for me, I am recording in HD.

Hey, you could wander south . . . I'm moving around Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore this summer for work. I know some good audio shops around here with great Usher gear and some seriously excellent sounding Italian brands.

Yeah, I took several thousand pictures. Saigon, is so crowded now, but damn the food and coffee is great! It has changed a lot since the last time I was there several years ago. The live music scene which were performed at coffee and tea night clubs was awesome. The shopping at high end stores (though I did not buy) was nice, I just went to know what it was like. The food at the fancier places were ridiculously expensive. My favorite areas to eat where the ones located along the streets. The scenery of the country side and beach resorts are breathtakingly beautiful, as are the women!

I am uploading some photos as I write this.

what does it cost in airline fees and other expenses for the 3-4 weeks ?

did you use a travel agency or was it all self planned.

The airlines fees depend on the time that you go, such as christmas, asian new years, or summer time. The flight fees could range from 800-1600 and that is through travel agency. You could have a great time with around $2000, which includes hotel, food, etc... If you like to live a little large, no matter how much you bring will not be enough. Cars cost on average 2-3 times more then here in the States, however the streets are crowded with brand new Lexus, BMW's, Mercedes... And a few Bentley's!

The amount of time to get to vietnam in total was 22 hours. I flew JAL, Japan Airlines from DFW. 13 hours from Dallas to Japan, layover for couple hours, then 6 hours to Vietnam. However, you take take different Airlines, seems China Air has the cutest stewards for eye candy!! So, of the three weeks, it takes two days total to and from. I normally go for 5 weeks, but this time, time was limited.

I still have many many more pics of the other cities. The link I posted was only for Nha Trang City, Phan Thiet, and Mui Ne.

Great looking photos! Looks almost paradise like -- which is just amazing considering the long wars for several decades. Lately I've been obssessed with Vietnam's history and in particular U.S. involvement there from the late 50s to the 70s.

I have one question in particular. Did you travel out to see any villages in the countryside (I didn't see too many pics)? I see that you've gone back before and I would be interested to hear how village life has or has not been transformed after the government began liberalizing the economy. Finally, aside from bars named "Good Morning Vietnam" was there any evidence at all that you could see of a long war being fought there (it sure doesn't look like it from your photos)?

    Norm,

Yes, I spent time out in the country side. I still have a lot of relatives in Vietnam, all over Vietnam actually. I am not old enough to tell you the difference of pre-war and post-war Vietnam. The country side is the most pristine areas of the country. The two largest cities are Hanoi out north and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) of the south. The effects of the war on the land itself does not seem to exist anymore, however the use of agent orange could be seen. It devastated many many people in that country, and the generation after that(deformed people).

Then again, every country has its problems and corruptions....

    Great shots!

I can also understand the historian's questions above. It's good to see historians in the last decade or so have honed in on the idea of "local histories". Something other fields have been aware for some time. Probably a matter of the greater numbers and growing areas of specialization. We too, have learned our 'share' from historians so I suppose it's cross-fertilization! Although if I remember correctly both of us are more China boys than not?

On the Chinese side of course. Regionalism reigns supreme and where you are and how close you are to the market reform areas does much to describe your prosperity or it's opposite (as a peasant). Something you don't hear much in our media or on the other side for that matter! The Great Chinese Miracle?

I tried to leave out pictures of the people I was with. The beach water was cool, however many of the areas that I went to were private beaches free of the tourist stuff. So, you will not see a lot of people there for privacy. The other beaches that I went to were to crowded and for security measures, did not bring out my camera.
