    I don't believe it I got a RMA #, now what? Would you use a Toshiba drive for an USB portable drive? Would you have that much faith in it?

    Put it in an external USB case and use it to backup files from the laptop. That's what I did with the drive I took out of my notebook after replacing it with a larger one.

    I don't buy what he says about killing UPS batteries running them way down. These are not car batteries, nor marine batteries, they're designed for running down to zilch. I've done it many times, as the power grid here is terrible. What they do is last 4-5 years as advertised, then caput.

    That's good advice on any desktop machine. However, he's talking about his laptops AC to DC supply, not desktops, and generally laptop power bricks are very reliable.

    Yeah, why listen to someone with 20 some years working in data centers.

    What the hell does he know?

    Try a google search. Something like:

    UPS battery discharge life

    would be a good start.

    Well this drive looking at by S.M.A.R.T shows "Reallocator Sector Count" as the trouble. Looking at smart by the green bars shows nothing at this table, where all others are nice and strong. Is this drive really shot? You couldn't low level format or anything?

    It needs to be replaced. As far as whether I would trust the replacement, I'd trust it just as much as any laptop drive. I've seen failures from all the manufacturers.

    I'm shocked they gave you a replacement ... normally when I've tried any OEM drive it's always "oh, it's OEM, call the manufacturer" which basically means it's past 1 year, you are SOL

    Yes I had this happen with a WD drive in a TiVo. :( So I'm surprised about it also, when I put part # in then serial # I was think the next screen is going to state SOL.... But never did :D

    All manufacturers have at least 3 years on OEM drives. I've never had a problem getting a replacement for an OEM computer. Devices like TIVO's may be different.

    I think we're talking about two different things here. There is OEM as in you ordered it from newegg/amazon/etc and it had no box or cables OEM, in which case yes you may normally will get a three year warranty.

    Then there is OEM as in it came pre-installed in a computer, TiVo, external case, laptop, etc. in which case many times the manufacturer provides no warranty whatsoever. In return for a massive discount to the equipment maker, the equipment maker provides all warranty services and the hard drive manufacturer provides none.
