Sub needed for Monitor 40 ?

I have been simply awestruck by the improvement my new (refurbished) monitor 40's have made to my listening. Used to have a pair of monitor 10B's back in the early 80's.

They replace 11yr old PSB Alphas, and I can't believe I didn't change sooner. The dimension, imaging and overall clarity is simply remarkable. The 2 Joni Mitchell CD's (Night Ride Home, and Turbulent Indigo) were especially revealing.

I thought I had heard everything, but now I need to re-listen to my entire collection (which is thankfully small)..Thankyou PolkDirect ..I use them for music in stereo.

Anyway - does anyone use a sub with these ? I have one I used with the Alpha, but was never entirely satisfied.

I know I can try (and I prob will), just wanted to see if anyone else

Thx,

Bill Clark

I have a pair of monitor 40s, they do sound pretty awesome. I was satisfied with the low end of the speakers, I used them with a BA sub for a while, but eventually went back to just the speakers. Alot of people that review them suggest a sub for full sound though

I think you will find a sub an enjoyable addition to the 40's, even for just music.
At the time I ordered my M 40's from Newegg, I added the PSW 10. It has a 10" woofer, 50 watts and at $100 shipped, it was a good deal.
But if I had it to do over, I think I would go with a JBL Balboa 10", 100 watt refurbished sub. There is a steady stream of them at The Harmon Kardon Ebay store that regularly go for around $100 plus shipping.

Yes!! You need to have a good sub to compliment the 40's. I have the 60's and 70's and I still feel like I need a sub for those speakers. The 70's have some low end but still benefit from more if you have a nice sub.

A relatively cheap sub I can recommend is the PA-120. Good output and was designed in partnership with Dr. HSU.

If I were you I would pick up a sub locally, at a brick and mortar store so you can see what a sub sounds like in your setup, and then return it if you don't like it or if you want to order one online
