I found this interesting read about Mount St Helens... It's scary stuff considering she still blows smoke. Maybe the 1980 eruption was just the beginning...

Since this is one of the many things that we as mere mortals have absolutley no control over im not really concerned one way or the other. We have a better chance of stopping a metorite from striking the earth than stopping a volcano from errupting. Why choose to get upset over simething you cant control or even predict?

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Agreed. I have a deep interest in the way the planet works and find such phenomena interesting to at least have a bit of knowlege about. Besides that, I am bored out of my skull at the moment.

Doesn't really matter since we already have a 'super-volcano' at Yellowstone. That one is probably much closer to erupting in a 'super' size event than St. Helens. If/when it does, it will wipe out most of the US under a heavy layer of ash/rock.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Awww, we are always on the precipice of disaster! If you don't believe in a greater Being with supreme control over everything, from the birds finding food to the stars aligning, it would be very scary world to live in. If everything was indeed left to chance, I don't think I would sleep as soundly at night...

...then again, I haven't been sleeping that soundly anyways... but I digress. :D

Here's another link that will give you some idea about the extent of the first eruption; most people have NO IDEA how huge & devastating it was:

If you look at the ash pattern from the 1980 eruption, you can see where this might be an even bigger deal than Yellowstone.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

If Yellowstone goes, which it will eventually, it will likely cover the entire continent with 5'' of ash and debris, coast to coast. Global temperatures will drop several degrees, and weather patterns will change for years. Welcome to Barter Town.
If I had to pick one from the menu, I'd take another duck **** from St. Helens please.

IF the scientists are correct, the caldera of a Mount St Helens SUPER VOLCANO stretches back to Mt Raineer, with a magma chamber at least 5 times the size of the one at Yellowstone. This, combined with thefact that this area is covered in granite, as opposed to the softer materials of Yellowstone means that a potential St.Helens super volcano could be several orders of magnitude more powerful than anything Yellowstone could produce.

LOL^^ My eruption is bigger, and I can prove it.

My point was that there is a long history of Yellowstone erupting every 600-800K years and changing the face of the entire planet for a few years. There is no history of Helens ever doing the same, and a small team of people from New Zealand offering an opinion or theory of what may or may not be possible isn't a substitute. If you look at the scale and history of both, there is no comparison.

Killer Volcanoes are almost a cool as global killer asteroids.

Joe vs. Volcano = Meg Ryan
    Armageddon = Liv Tyler

I'd be concerned about anyone that worried about either even happening.
That doesn't make it less interesting to me though. . Pompeii and Toba as historical cases in point. Toba may have almost extincted our species.

Agreed... I am fascinated by the awesome power of the planet to remake itself with.... or without us. This is perhaps why I am inclined to believe the global warming crap can be attributed to one cause, the SUN. I don't loose sleep over it by any means, unless I cannot turn off the Discovery Channel.
