PETA targets Pike Place Market fish throwers

PETA has taken a stand against one of the most popular tourist attractions in Seattle - the fish market at the Pike Place Market that tosses salmon.

PETA heard that the American Veterinary Medical Association planned a Pike Place Fish Market demonstration at next month's convention at the convention center.

PETA sent a letter to the association saying people who care about animals are appalled fish would be treated as toys. A spokeswoman for PETA in Norfolk, Va., Lindsay Rajt, says veterinarians should show compassion.

PETA hasn't heard from the veterinarians.

An assistant manager at the Pike Place Fish Market, Justin Hall, says workers there respect fish because it's their livelihood and they take pride in having the best seafood.

    Tasty...

PETA folks are lost and have no clue. If they would shift their focus to people and ditch the animals I would support them.

There's ethical treatment of animals. And then there's the rabid don't
eat, keep, or molest animals. WTF? There wouldn't be many cattle on the
earth if we didn't keep them for milk/meat. Same with hogs and chickens.
Most of our baking would be impossible without eggs and milk.
There are many who watch over the care of animals without the terrorist
type of approach. Clean, healthy, conditions for the raising of livestock
not only is humane, but makes for a better product. But make no mistake,
we are born to eat meat. Get over it.

Will someone explain to me what fish tossing is? If they are tossing around dead fish I don't have a problem with it, since they are already dead. However if they are tossing around live ones I do have a problem with it.

Picture someone doing that to your dog or cat.

Sucks2beme, I agree with you. And I hope that when the time comes, those animals are put down as quickly & as painlessly as humanely possible.

But at the same time I don't believe in hunting. It was different when we had to hunt to feed ourselves, but that is no longer the case. If people hadn't hunted natural predators practically out of existance we might have fewer problems with over populations of the prey the other predators hunted.

I've been to Seattle harbor and sidewalks where the said fish market is on. It's actually is a little funny PETA making this a great deal out of it. The fish thrower are usually fishermen by trade and they treat the DEAD fish with care when throwing it from one to the other. Since if you squeeze the fish a bit too hard, it would be soft on that area and no way they want that to happen. They are actually very skilled and very careful at throwing fish at each other with excellent timing between them. The main reason people buy fish from there is that you could get a bit fresher fish (DEAD) than from the supermarket (DEAD, Frozen, and Thawed). I guess PETA needs to see how inhumane it is. But it's a good tourist attraction for Seattle and rest assured, these fish throwers are nice folks who takes pride in what they do and treat the Dead fish with Great Care! The fish market there has supports from the locals even though they are usually more expensive than what you would have paid from the supermarket. But folks there support the local fisheries and buy from the market and thus it became a tourist attraction.

I'm with you. I don't actively hunt, but when I lived in the backwater woods of Louisiana growing up, if you wanted good, affordable meat, you found it and shot it or you dropped a line in the water for it.

I've nothing against hunting, provided that it yields a few meals and not just a trophy.

That's cool. You must save a ton of money on your grocery bill.

A few years ago, upstate N.Y. was overflowing with deer. I don't know if
that's still the case or not. But driving at night was a real treat.
My brother in law used to hit a deer at least once a year.

Idiots. But on the other hand, you reap what you sow, and Seattle is definitely not the place I grew up in amymore. The lunatic fringe took over years ago, and now they're turning on themselves. The Market was always a big attraction for the greenie crowd.

But, seeing that picture makes me want to fly back home just so I can go to the Market to get a big helping of ciopinno with some sliders. :p

on a side note, a friend of mine in HS worked down there and spent a lot of time on tv because of his fish throwing/catching skills.

PETA is also going by the name Humane Society of The United States these days. Just an FYI, although the pattern of action remains the same no matter which name is used.

Cathy some day you and Mark will have to visit the "other" Washington.. the one where I live on the West coast. :D and see fish tossing for yourself. It's amazing they never drop a fish.

The hunting of natural predators has nothing to do with over population. The fact that people take up more and more ground is. We take up more ground, which in turn pushes wildlife to smaller areas, which causes over population. Ironically, the only way to keep animals like deer from over populating, then eating all there is to eat in that area...which in turn will make them all starve, is by hunting. So its not all that bad.

I'd also love to see British Columbia.

    Cathy,

It's a famous fish market in Washington. The fish are previously caught and are dead - ready for consumption. Fish are very slippery, yet these folk have learned to toss them to another colleague who is preparing to make fillets, steaks, etc out of them. It is cool to watch and good marketing on their end for drawing such attention.

PETA is behaving like *****oles here because: fish are being caught by others (and, by definition, killed), but this place is very visable concerning their processing of the catch. Personally, if they do not want fish caught, then PETA should give hell to the fishermen. Unfortunately, that does not have the publicity level PETA wants and has achieved here.
