When I worked 3rd shift... I worked. Was working in a carpet factory... no access to a computer if I needed one.
I work days now, and I'm in computers by trade... so I do my work, and occasionally check for new posts. Andnow, I'm ready for bed.Ludicrous gibs! -
"What do 2nd/3rd shift guys do?"...they get a 1st shift job.

I work 1st, 2nd or 3rd. It depends on my mood and how many people I don't feel like dealing with that day. ..oops ..I forgot..I work by myself...Damn!....

Don't deny it Russ, you whack pud.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

I'm at work also but I'm not working. I was always told the more you make the less you do. It's true....

There's very little to do at this time as there are no calls coming it, I just wait for an escalation (which I love) or a technical question. Otherwise it's browse the web or chat with the coworkers.Main Surround -

It sounds like you work for the government (I have work there for over 25 years). I get paid a very pretty penny working for the private sector now. 'Just finished up a business development presentation about an hour ago (1:30 A.M) and am now "decompressing" by scanning Club Polk. -

Russ,, you are too animated.Ever think about Hollywood?
I'm thinking Warner Brothers.;)JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut) -
Did dayshift directly after receiving degree....then a few years of swing shift from 3:30 to midnight....after that is was 17 years of 7pm to 7:30 am.
With most engineering/vendor downtime happening in the day, we basically had to complete all PM's and then run production all through the night to get the WIP out....you dont get to sit on your **** much if at all. The production supervisors/leads know our pager numbers by heart....so yeah, there are night shift workers who dont get to surf all night long. The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -
I work all hours of the day and night depending on the job/contract. I don't have a set schedule. For example, I worked yesterday for 3 hours but it was broken up. I picked someone up from the airport and dropped them off at the Capitol. Later on I picked them back up and took them back to their plane. This Saturday I will be working from 10pm until....... because the Pittsburg Steelers will be in town and I have been contracted out for their security (like these guys can't protect themselves- but hey, it's insane money so I can't complain). Only way to pass the time in this line of work is to go over every last detail again and again and again to make sure everything goes as it should.

Officially I am 1st shift. But that's only so my employer doesn't have to pay me 3rd shift differential. Being in IT and doing systems engineering since before I got out of school, most of my work happens in off hours. At my previous job, I was lucky enough that off hours started at 6pm and I could get most work done before midnight. At my current job, we are 24/7 and the Sun never sets on us with offices on every continent and work happening around the globe in something like 37 countries. My time to do major work is 3rd shift.
But that is the life of IT in enterprise environments. I still do piles of design work and engineering during the normal business hours too. I am always connected through either the CrackBerry or a network on my laptop. I run high speed networks at home so I can get to work efficiently from home. Work subsidizes the costs of me personal networks at home so I can have the level of access I need to do work for them. If I need to get on and no network is present, I have a 3g wireless air card provided by my employer too. I get stuck working even on my "vacations". In fact, I usually don't get approved for vacation unless I promise that I am taking my systems with me. My Crackberry for work has an 8GB memory card and I have a full "productivity suite" with spreadsheets, word processors and email clients as well as internet browsers, FTP and SSH clients. It's synced with my laptop too and also runs on a 3g network. I even have a mobile version of our helpdesk ticketing system on my phone. How bad does that suck?
Yeah, I'm 1st shift but there honestly is no shift for me. I'm always on, always connected, always live so there never really is any downtime for me. I have a personal CrackBerry so that I can stay connected at the opposite end with my friends and family. Since I'm rarely at home or available by face to face means, they can get to me in 4 different ways through my single personal CrackBerry. But this is the life I chose.
But people always want to know why "IT Geeks get paid so much but don't do anything?" Well, two points to make there. When we do our jobs properly, you never see us working. That's how it's supposed to be. We get paid so much because of the responsibility levels, stress levels and the fact that while you get to go home to your family and sleep in your warm bed with your hot trophy wife, I'm slaving away in humming computer rooms in front of glowing screens making sure your systems are up and running and protected from the bad guys. I'm on call always for you. But you don't want to pay me for that time. So you compensate me by upping my base payscale. That's why us IT Geeks get paid so much. We keep your world running smoothly. Besides, the better we are at IT, the more cash we can command on the pay check. Good work costs money, great work costs even more.
But I can surf all day because the Internet is attached to my hip. It's always there and I take my free time when I can get it.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Lucky you! My boss had everyone install the Google GPS app to their Crackberrys. Now they can see where we are so even if I call out "sick" to go fishing, they'll see my phone floating in the middle of the ocean.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Now that would suck!
I work 2nd and 3rd shift....6:30 PM to 7am. But I am in a hospital, so work is always needing to be done. And with two vehicle rollovers in a 4 day period with 24 illegals in one car, and 18 missionary refugee's in the other roll over, my work will be busy for at least another month. -

I sometimes wonder the same here, Lightman. Today's presentation went off fabiously (they bought) and I was subsequently given an unsolicited 10% raise ... which paid for the new car I just bought. Tomorrow morning I will be mowing my grass and doing home chores while others will be commuting off to work.
Then business (suit and tie ****) during the afternoon and, perhaps, into the evening.
When working out of my house, the business attire is "clothing optional."
(I still privately smile if some of the folk I conference call with really knew what I was wearing during a business conference call! ) On a few occasions, I've missed incoming business calls because the SDAs were turned up too loud. Mute on a remote is your friend!
It all balances ... otherwise I would seeking employment elsewhere else.... -

I saw in the news somewhere that there was a ford explorer full of hispanics piled like lumber in the back. Rolled over, 10 were thrown and killed. The other 12 in the back survived and were hospitalized/incarcerated.Ludicrous gibs!
