Denon 1910 (or 1909) and Monitor Series

Hello,

I am looking at the Monitor line of Polk speakers to match with the Denon 1910 (next in line after the 1909 - basically the same model). I was thinking of going with:

L/R Front: Monitor 40
Center: CS2
Rear: Monitor 10 (tho may stick with my Magnavox crappy ones for a bit)
Sub: For now a crappy powered Magnavox I have from an older HTIAB.

Thoughts about this setup? Was looking at the Polk Audio RM6750 but I imagine these Monitor's would sound much better and they wouldn't be that much more expensive then the RM6750. I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything as I am a newb to home theater setup. I probably do 80% TV and 20% music. Room size is pretty small. Not sure of the exact spects since we just bought the place and haven't moved in yet. Probably not looking to go to floor standing speakers so I figured the 40s would be the best I could do for my fronts. Thanks for any help!
Denon AVR-790
Samsung 40" LCD HDTV
Samsung DVD
Fronts: Monitor 50s
Center: CS1

Personally, I would go with Monitor 60's or 70's for the front.

I know some people who have used the 40's for front channels and have not been dissapointed. I currently use the 40's for surround speakers, which is their "intended" use, but again it is possible to use them as fronts. They obviously wouldn't be as good as the 60's or 70's, but if you don't want floorstanders then the 40's should work nicely for you. Hopefully someone who has some experience with the 40's as front channels will see this and give you some more/better advice. As far as "matching" the Monitors to your Denon, that won't be a problem. The 1910 puts out about 90W per channel @ 8 ohms and the 40's normal operating range is 20-125W, so you will be fine there. Good luck and welcome to Club Polk.

I would think that the Monitor 40's should keep you happy for a bit, and the Denon should have zero issues running them... Much better than a HTIAB

My Denon AVR-2808Ci runs my Monitor 70's, CS2 and FXi3 surrounds without a problem.

If you don't want floorstanders, then I would definitely go with the the 40's. Try to wait for a nice price on Newegg or something for them if you're trying to be cost-conscious. I think that they were something like $129/pair for a while because I was going to get them, but went bigger;) I like your idea of the CS2 because it's an awesome center channel, but beware. If you don't have a large area, this beast will present problems for you. I've measured it before, but can't remember off-hand just how big it is. Welcome to Club Polk, btw.

Excellent point Rodeo, I totally agree with this statement. The CS2 is an awesome center channel and as he stated it is pretty beefy, but you will not be dissapointed. Btw the measurements are as follows: 7-3/4" H x 21-1/4" W x 11-1/8" D :-)

The M10 ( I was half expecting a link to vintage Monitor 10, and surprised why you'd want to use such monsters as surround, and why nobody else commented ) speaker is not a "Monitor", but from the R/T/M series one step below.

The equivalent Monitor line speaker is Monitor 30.

M10, R150 and like bookshelves is something almost all of us have hidden in closets (whether we admit it or not is another thing) for those cases "I just need a small disposable speaker that still sounds half-decent" but unless you already have them, I'd pick a matching set from the start.

Good point, I didn't even pay attention to that. I just figured he had the 10's laying around, but like VS said I would pick up the Monitor 30's to have a better "blended" sound. NewEgg has them for $100 shipped.

thanks everyone...this is very helpful. Sounds like I should try to convince the wife that we need floor standing speakers for the front. Also, glad I got corrected about 10 vs 30 for the surrounds.

I did read elsewhere that the CS2 was a beast but I think I can make it fit.

I think you will like the combo of Monitor speakers and Denon 1910 Reciever. I had a Denon 1909 teamed up with some M70 fronts, CS-2 center, M60 surrounds, and R50 rear surrounds and it sounded fantastic! Like the others have said, I would strongly consider getting M70s or M60s as fronts (preferably the M70s, they are head and shoulders better than the 60s for music). Add a good sub or two to that setup and you will have one heckuva fine system.
