What exactly would 10.2 be?

Ive heard about, but...exactly where would the speakers be? I mean in 8.1 you got back surrounds. back center. Side or front surrounds. mains, and a center. What else is there to add?

First - nothing, then mono, then stereo, then quad, then 5 channel, then 6, then 8 damn... by the time I'm old and crustry ther'll be like what, infinity + 1 speakers? Or more?...

Wouldn't it be better to focus on improving the technology we have? The general public's belief is that sound comes from a speaker and never from anywhere other than the speaker. Try to explain imaging to a lay person. Just try it. It's the reduculous number of channels that just spreads this belief.

I believe it has 3 rear speakers, 2 overhead, 2 subs...overkill basically for a home theater.

if you had a 20by 30 room sothing more than 7.1 might be a good thing but for many ht 7.1 is a little overkill. anything smaller than 10by 20 5.1 or 6.1 would do. big theater usalu have 3-4 baack surounds and 6-8 side surounds in a time delayed then the standerd 3 upfront with a sub.

But seriously, I asked my mother what she thought stereo was for "So different sounds can come out of each speaker." Technically correct, but not really. And my grandmother once said "Well can't you just use one speaker?" :mad: "I'm not going to start a pissing contest here" was what I instantly told myself. I can understand what my grandmother said, she's never heard anything better than the tv speakers. But my mother uses the computer every day, and even those computer speakers she has give a fantastic image. She's had the computer for 3 years now and she still hasn't asked if there's another speaker in the monitor because that's where all the sounds come from. Oh well, I guess I never really noticed the stereo phenomenon until I got interested in audio and I guess it is one of those things you don't appreciate until you know about it. Trouble is most people don't know, and they automatically assume that 10 speakers would be far superior to 8. Screw 8, that was yesterdays technology. I want my 10 speakers goddamit.

Is this the same idea as 10.2? I have always wondered if all of the speakers were actually seperate channels, or just hooked up in a series/parallel. I have tried a few times to get specs for movie theaters but to no avail. Does anyone have the answer to this? thanks.

(Radio Shack) Black RCA® 50-Watt, 2-Way Die-Cast Mini-Speaker - $40
times ten = 400

(Circuit City) - Sony 50 watt 8" subwoofer - $100
times two = 200

(unknown vendor) - (comparitavely)Dirt Cheap 10.2 receiver - $300 (guestimation)

(Circuit City) - Apex DVD player - $60

(unknown vendor) - Wires and interconnects - $400 (10 channels is a shitload of speaker wire)

Add it up: $1360 - And guess what, your system sucks!

times 4 = $280

Add it up: $1330 - And guess what, your system rocks!

Hopefully, consumers would see that the 5.1 system is a much better value and not be won over by the wow factor of 10 speakers.

I'd guess it's matrixed like Pro Logic, just with a lot more channels.

I read something about this and I think Aaron posted something on it some time ago. 10.2 isn't an actual format, rather, it's a format that Dave Chesky has proposed. For the average schmo, it's total overkill.

Well this is a good discussion. Im the type of guy that would put 10 speakers in any room. Haha. Even my own. *ROFL* Yeah right, I'd be deaf in 5 years. Although I plan on having 6.1 in my room. Seems more than enough for me. Wait, I already have 9 speakers in my room, 4 speakers arnt plugged up though.

Why don't we just build a tall room with an acoustically transparent floor. Then you could arange 50 speakers in a spherical pattern!

And while we're at it let's put one of those planetarium type projectors in the middle of a spherical room so the picture can fill the entire ceiling/wall!

And BTW, eff 50.1 - Let's make it 1000.10! Now that's what I call surround sound!

Seriously though, I could see the benefit of a top surround. Current technology puts sound within a 2 dimensional plane. But it should be done discretely, not matrixed. Otherwise I think you would get more of a sound pyramid than a soundstage

10.2 is 5.1 too much.

I don't see myself EVER going past 5.1, unless I am eventually forced to, through lack of down-converting, available gear, etc.

10.2 doesn't employ any speakers on the ceiling. It's 2 mains, a center, a mid-room side wall surround, surrounds to the side of the seating position, a set of rear surrounds, a rear center, and a front and back sub.....
