i own a denon avr 1803. for the radio i can keep the volume around -35 and it plays at a reasonable volume. For dvds however i have to turn it up to around -15 or -20. I am using an optical cable for the audio. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and know if its normal for different sources to play at different volume levels? thanks

Most popular music radio stations use tons of processing to make their audio seem loud as possible (think of it like you are listening at 100% loudness). Film makers usually don't record things that loud so explosions and things have way more impact than normal conversation (think of the voices at around 50% loudness, and the explosions at 100%) So to hear dialogue at the same loudness as you would hear it on the radio you would have to turn it up 50% louder. (But then explosions are also 50% louder so make sure nobody is in the house and your system can go that loud! We never like to hear "This morning my Untitled Brand XYZ broke..." kind of posts)

Im not sure where its at. But *I think* it is in my shelf, on the top shelf, behind a bunch of papers and books. *I think* and u and I both know that wont get me far *thinking that is* U know, it could be in my closet...where I cant reach it because I threw it there. Then again it could be all cut up in the city dump. But you know, then again Im not quite sure.Damn you all, damn you all to hell.......

Oh well, the damn things cost like what? $3? Can't be that big of a loss. If you have leftover speaker cable or anything with 2 wires that is long enough to be tuned to the proper frequency then you can just make one yourself. Or if you REALLY don't like to do the math

And if even that is too expensive

Thanks for starting this thread. I notice the same thing from my DVD player. My concern was that the player I use is my computer. For me it works great. I just use my 19" monitor (which to me is huge) and take the sound through my sound card. I too have to crank up the volume to get it anywhere close to what my CD player produces sound at. I am glad to hear that I am not alone. I was nervous because I thought I had just gotten ripped off with a crappy $110 sound card. Its no fun spending money in college when you can't afford to make any mistakes with it.

The difference in volume is a good thing to keep in mind when you are buying a receiver. At -15 or 20, you're probably ok, but I've seen people who regularly put it a -5 or even 0 for dvd's. The distortion level is going to be higher there and you could easily wind up with a damaged speaker.

My yammer would scream and jump in a lake if I even thought of going to -20.00.......................Damn you all, damn you all to hell.......

Hey Mx, I don't personally care, but there are a lot of people that access this site from work or school and your signature might be a little frowned upon. You might think about changing it bro.

I have to agree MX. If my yamaha gets below 30 my ears will start to ache after about 5 minutes or so.
Usually play movies at -37 to -40. -
If not for the people at work and school, then newbies. We want to make a good impression and not come across as demented pervs.
