An Ode to JOY!

I have been listening now to two hours of pure vinyl bliss. At first my ears were not accustomed to the pop/hiss and such that come from imperfections on the discs. My previous listening to albums came for a moment here or there do to the fragile nature of my dead Technics linear tracker. My Denon DP-52f is a Thing of beauty, but I digress...
It has become appearant as I listen that the music I have been so passionate about on CD's may be techincally perfect, but seems to be missing something in translation from 1's and 0's into the sound my ears hear. I am no expert in sound reproduction or how cd's or vinyl is made, and never will be. I can define however what my ears hear, and what is missing from those intoxicating shiny silver discs is PASSION, a soul if you will. I cannot believe the difference in authority a set of kick drums hit with when comparing the exact same track from a cd to its vinyl counterpart. The clarity of a violin or the dynamic power of a human voice simply sounds an more importantly FEELS ALIVE!
Were it not for the Vinyl warriors here at Polk I may have never rediscovered the magic of going back to black. as always, my wallet feels the pain now, but my ears are truly grateful.:D
Thanks Guys:cool:

Vinyl is cool but it can't beat Reel-to-Reel Master Tapes! How could it? That's the real SOURCE!! So where's the discussion on those here?

one day i wil delve into the vinyl side....as will I go back to Reels.....but that`s a whole new adventure !!
There are those that do the reels here at CP, and the ones that do are very into that type of source....there just aren`t as many as do vinyl (here at CP anymore)
I hope that one day I am able to get ahead again, and get into exspanding my horizons again.

Based on the comments in your initial post, I would suggest moving up to a better CD player or acquiring a DAC as your next move. All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident. -
Vinyl is vinyl. There aren't enough 0's and 1's to capture the sound of it
properly on any redbook CD. You get the surface noise of the album,
the good with the bad. I had a demo at a shop where a customer brought in
a bunch of albums and cd's of the same music. They matched volumes as
best they could, and played back record VS. cd. In most cases the vinyl
won hands down. There was one where it sounded like someone did a
very good re-master. But other than that, vinyl was better. To anyone
who hasn't heard it, it's hard to explain. IT's like tubes. I had a bunch of
19 old kids over on head fi trying to tell us why tubes HAVE TO SOUND BAD.
They had never heard any, but specs don't lie, do they?
They refused to believe that my ears found them better. Vinyl is better.
IT's ugly, time consuming and tricky to set up. I know it's better, I've
owned them in the past. But I'm trying hard to stay away.
Now if GG would just stop trying to tempt me with all those great old
albums in the FM!"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

Hello,
I've been listening to the Tape Project tapes and they are excellent, the best audio source anybody can play on their systems. Scary good!
Ken -
John, glad to see you are enjoying vinyl.
mhardy, thanks for the link
Ken, thanks for the comments.

lol... another salient point F1, I loved my Yamaha gear when I first came here, but now see it for what it truly is, great entry level midfi stuff at best. There are a few pieces worthy of exception such as the RX-z line, but I have moved on to better power and sound. I look forward to a better CD player next, perhaps a tubed player. The Gear... I have a Yamaha DVD-Audio/SACD player. A weak link for sure...but passable for now. The CD world is full of a wide range of Players...and the good ones don't come without some coin! But you can hear the Yamaha strain on the highs as you turn her up. Pop go your eardrums. You can survive at more moderate volumes.

Don't get me wrong it's not bad, especially at that PRICE. I've had it for a year or so...and it does OK...it just gets a bit bright when you pump the amp--at least on my Adcom...Denon set up.
100 dollars....really??

Hello Mhardy6647,
It looks like you've got an external playback amp on the Revox? Is that a home brew?
Ken -
That's a Decware Zen SE-84B. It was just being used for testing on the bench; it's only about 2 watts per channel.
www.decware.com -
Ah, thanks for the explanation. There's been some interest in using tube phono stages, with some EQ changes, as a playback pre-amp for open reel. Coming right from the playback head to the external pre-amp. A lot of research on the classic Ampex 350 and 351 electronics and updating them. The TP tapes have caused a rebirth of open reel interest.
Ken -
Some of us never lost interest in R2R, Ken :-)
The Bottlehead Seduction is a fine MM preamp (that's what I use in the "real" hifi in the living room... which BTW includes a TASCAM 22-4 and a Pioneer RT-909 on the "reel" side); I am sure with modifications to the NAB or IEC EQ curves it makes a fine playback EQ for R2R at a very reasonable price!
I am a Bottlehead devotee (if not fanboy) from way back and I've monitored the Tape Project with both interest and bemusement.
I happen to have a large AKAI autoreverse R2R (I think the model is GX-202?) taking up space int he basement which has one bad output channel. Someday it will likely become a candidate for an outboarded, vacuum tube preamp/EQ stage.
It is probably also (barely!) worth mentioning that many older vacuum tube preamps and integrated amps included NAB ("NARTB") head amps for "tape decks" right on board. Probably not the greatest EQ options available, but ready to go for anyone who has one and wants to play. -
Ah, yes I know what you mean. Right now I've collected a Crown CX-824, Sony TC-850 (which I went crazy and re-wired it completely, every wire, with Cardas co-axial cable and even did a "star grounding" for each wire, I must have been off my rocker when I thought of that idea) in beautiful condition. I've had the Sony since I worked for the Sony company, on Okinawa, in 1969. I've also collected the Sony TC-666D, excellent transport. Two Revox A77, one is a high speed 1/2 track, a Revox PR99 as well as a PR99 playback only deck. An excellent sounding Tandberg TD20A with Black Gates and Vishay bulk foil resistors (the best sounding 1/4 track deck I've heard). A Stellavox SP7 that is calibrated for the TP tapes and had a few mods done. A Teac big auto reverse deck that i can never remember the model number. Also, part way overhauled an Ampex 351 with three record/playback pre-amps. A less overhauled Scully 280B with matching electronics (germanium transistors in those guys!) and an untouched Tapesonic TR80, hand made deck from a New York company. Also a Tandberg 64 tube unit with "joy stick" control, a couple of Advent Dolby B units and a Teac AN180 Dolby unit.
I've been able to enjoy some excellent master tape copies over the years and the TP tapes are wonderful.
Ken -
My A77 was morphed into a high-speed half-track deck by Charles "Stellavox" King. It is the result of combining three basket case A77s into one rather homely but high-performing A77. I have the other two carcasses in the basement (don't have the heart to pitch 'em).
I am jealous of your Stellavox, Ken.
A Stellavox and an Otari are still on my wish list. A big ol' Crown would be nice, too. Come to think of it, I am jealous of your Crown, too!
:-) -
A small world, I got my Stella from Charles King, a great guy and really knows his stuff. I had to replace the selector switch, on the SP7, and he helped me do it. It was the hardest repair I've had to do yet, one of the guys here used a CCR to machine the mounting bracket to allow for the slightly longer selector switch in the cramped space. At each position of the selector knob several actions have to happen and the overall logic to attaching the tiny wires was skull rattling.
Now I'm working to modify a PR99 so it will play NAB at 7.5 IPS and IEC at 15 IPS. This is a playback only version of the PR99 but in really beautiful condition. I've got all of the .1% Vishay bulk foil resistors but haven't begun working on the board.
The Crown is a really beautiful deck, I got it from John Haines who used to work for Crown. He also is a really great person to work with and does a great job. He has a friend, also retired from Crown, who can make custom cabinets from solid exotic woods.
It's nice seeing the re-interest in open reel these machines need dedicated collectors who clean them up and use them. They represent some of the best craftsmanship America and Europe and Asia did in that era of audio.
Ken -
Charles is indeed a great guy. He lives close enough to us "northern New England tube nuts" so that we see him regularly.
-
I'd love to hear his REL tuner, that must be a treat. I understand he's located a source for a good sounding capacitor that is made near where he lives. I knew the name of the company, but can't remember. He aligned a Scott tube tuner for me that had been man-handled by UPS.
