Man,was watching some soccer the other night, and I'll be damned if that blue haze came back on my TV.Had the whole light engine replaced 2 years ago due to the same crap.A Sony we610,60 inch wega RPLCD,just bought a new bulb for that sucker too.Between repairs and the initial cost,I have 4 g's into this sucker and I'm only getting 5 friggin' years out of it? Needless to say a new engine cost about a grand,so the thing is garbage now.A call to Sony was promptly met with a middle finger,I'm done with Sony. After reading some blogs,Sony has admitted poor quality in the optical boards for their light engines but has done some customers right by replaceing as long as you had an extended warranty. They stopped short of a recall. So the warranty goes,so does your TV.Never ever will I buy a Sony again.:mad:
Any suggestions for a TV that will last 10 years?? I hate haveing to drop 3-4 g's every 5 years for the privelage of watching TV.The new Samsung LED's are nice, too expensive.Plasma ? Maybe.Hell,I might even go back to a HD crt set.Too bad they don't make them anymore.I'm just pissed off today at the lack of these companies to make a quality product or stand behind them.

Welcome to the bleeding edge. You're not going to get 10 years out
of anything. They're going to make changes and make it all obsolete
anyway. I'm sure they'll be a new interface, maybe 20.1 sound, ETC."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -
I'd never buy a projection TV in a current market - be it an LCD or a DLP... Too many problems.
Regarding Samsung... Their quality control on TVs is not the best one either. My coworker had to exchange his 40" LCD 3 times in the last 4 days. Every one had some (small) problem. So far, he is saying that the 4th one works.
From plasma, look at Pioneer (xx20 and xx10 models, if I remember correctly;even though it's discontinued, Kuro is still amazing) and Panasonic (Z800, Z850).
For LCD, Sony (W, Z and XBR). I used to say Sony and Samsung, but after coworker's experience, I'd hesitate to recommend Samsung TVs.Panasonic PT-AE4000U projector for movies

If you don't have a lot of light in the room, get yourself a good Panasonic or Pioneer Plasma. If you have to go LCD for light reasons, Sony is the only way I'd go. The new Samsung LEDs are nice but way to expensive for what you get IMO. ANYTHING projection is a no go and I have said that once DLP and LCD hit the market. I wouldn't own one and never recommended one to any family/friends. My dad bought one anyway and he needed a bulb in 1 year, 1 month and 1 week. I thought it was funny seeing he had the depth to do a CRT RP and he didn't want it "because it's too big." Weak! I only own Sony TVs but when I get a new TV for the basement HT, it'll be a Panasonic Plasma.Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

My LG has been a great tv so far, and I would recommend the brand highly. My mom's year old (14month)Samsung died and they told here to buy a new on as well. The Gear... Have you looked at the professional model Panny plasma displays? They have hot swappable boards in the back for any future interfaces, and are designed to be left on all day if needed. They are bulletproof and have a great picture. The trade is that they are just monitors, and don't have built in speakers/tuner. A few times a year, they offer a Free 5 year In-house warranty, just mail them the receipt, and they mail you the certificate of warranty. I have it on one of the two sets, but doubt I'll ever need it for either. Worth a look.
Part numbers look like : TH-50pf11uk or TH-50ph11uk
pf=full (1080), ph=high (768) substitute a smaller or larger number for the '50', and you can move up and down in size. From a couple of feet away, it's hard to tell the difference between the two options, but the price difference is still sizable. '-Ignorance is strength - -

Panny plasmas...a good deal.
That's one reason I refused to buy a light engine RP TV when I bought mine years ago. Plasmas were way too expensive. DLPS, and LCD projections had a 2 year bulb lifespan! Customer beware! I chose to wait out the HDTV mess and got myself an old school CRT/RPTV HDTV...Toshiba.....almost 5 years and counting....flawless--will go many more years. Only 1080i of course but colors and picture close to a plasma--no motion blur. Yeah it's BIG! You need to have professional calibration for the best possible picture. In 5 years or less....I'll go with Plasma or whatever the next great thing is and I'll have saved myself all the early fuss and experimentation. You'd be surprised just how good these old timers can look. Of course they can't do the blu-ray 1080p dance. But 1080i's good enough for now.

Huh? There is no such thing as a 'light engine' in LCD TVs - you probably mean newer LCD rear projection?Panasonic PT-AE4000U projector for movies

There's a trade off, no matter what technology you go with.
DLP, some people see rainbow effect
LCD, motion blur, poor black levels
Plasma, screen door effect
I went with a Mits. DLP. I don't see the rainbow effect unless I look away fast. I replaced the bulb after 2 1/2 years (@ $130) i.e. not a big deal IMO.
For me, it was the best compromise. If you don't "need" to hang your tv on the wall, it's hard to beat a good DLP.
