Epson 1080UB lamp failure

Tonight I turned on the PJ and I get the blinking power light for 15-20 seconds, but no picture. The fans in the unit run however.

Does this mean the unit has a bad lamp, ballast, or something else? I believe the unit is trying to power up but there is no "high-temp" or "lamp warning" light lit.

The lamp only had 400 hours.

My Dad just came up from downstairs and told me "there's a burning smell." Does a projector lamp usually fail like this? On AVS Forum I read that some lamps on projectors can even explode.

sounds like a bad bulb. Don't the Epsons come with an extra bulb?

Bad bulb. That's how they go. One day you turn it on and........nothing.

the epsons using that new cheap bulb that gets a raoid dimming fast, but however the ETORL bulbs supposed to last 4000 hours, i suspect the bulbs wasted because of the electronics malfunctioning , there shouldent be a burning smell when a bulb blows, also make sure you got it vented ,my pj overhated in the first 3 hours because i had it back against the wall , even though the exhaust is on the front

Premature bulb fairly is not really rare and does not mean the electronics in the projector are going bad. It's simply a bulb failure, every lamp will fail @ some point, some sooner than others. Often times a burning smell is possible depending on projector. Sony PJs have a funny smell after initial install so smells are not anything you should concern yourself with unless you continue to smell it on and throughout the life of th PJ. Replace the bulb and let us know.

I've had that happen once. I turned it off and waited for a while, then tried again, it powered up.
