EPI 360s?

A friend of mine has a pair of mid-eighties EPI-360s--see link below. I've always thought these were nice sounding speakers and were worth holding on to. They're beginning to show some signs of wear...the foam surrounds are shot, for example...and who knows what's going on inside.

I was wondering if anyone else is familiar with these or has heard them? Is it worth reconditioning them and keeping them....because that's what I'm telling him he should do?

Thanks,

I've never heard that model. I did have another newer model from the T/E series, the TE 320II. If I still had them, they would definitely be worth re-foaming. Not sure if they can be re-foamed though, the foam covered the entire back of the woofer.

Not familiar with the EPIs you are talking about. But I am in the process of replacing the surrounds in my Genesis 320s. I will not part with these, until there is no way to keep them sounding good. But maybe a lot of that is the appeal vintage gear has to me. The fact that they were/are really good sounding speakers helps too.

It seams early EPIs and the founder/designer Winslow Burhoe get lots of praise. I would suspect maybe some xo work if not now in the near future will be needed as well. I see HUMAN come up often as a good place to get parts and repairs for the Genesis/EPI speakers. The owner seems to have a strange sense of humor if you explore the site a little.

I think it is like anything else, one mans treasure is another mans trash.

The early EPI/Epicure speakers were quite good for the $ (not unlike the Polk Monitors of the same era). By the mid-1980s, the brand name had been sold and the speakers thereafter were somewhere between generic and junky.

Win Burhoe is still around and still (at least sporadically) in business. Last I knew, he lives in Weston, MA (the high rent district). http://directacoustics.com/

The EPI 1000s were pretty impressive to see and to hear. This is a picture of Mr. Burhoe and the 1000s.

    Thanks M....

Actually the EPI T/E 360s sound pretty impressive. They image well, are fast and very detailed--have tight voluminous bass. As noted in the link; they were made from 82-87 with little change in design.

I know about what you mean concerning their speakers after this--no comparison. But these are very nice. I remember my friend getting them on close out for 200 dollars a pair new! A steal even then. Logged lots of hours listening to these babies.

The T/E series were indeed OK; after them, not so much.

Those predate the T/E (at least the 400s do), and were excellent (I always liked the big Epicure 20s).
