RM6750's & Yamaha RX-V465 - Sub Cable or Speaker Wire

Hi All,

First time poster. I realize this issue has been covered in other threads, but I'm still confused.

I'm going to be hooking up the RM6750's to a Yamaha RX-V465 AVR. This system will be used primarily for home theater, not music. Given that, it makes no difference to me whether I hook up the sub using the designated cable or speaker wires. I'd just like to get the most "thump" that I can, when needed.

Thank you!

Don't completely follow your question....Welcome to CPolk in any case.

HTIB units are designed so that you use the sub cable from the sub out on the Yamaha to the LFE in to the sub. That's what HT is about. Then set the crossover as described in your Polk manual through the Yamaha.

Thank you for the feedback. My confusion comes from both the manual for the RM6750's and the Polk Audio Handbook. They show both the sub cable to the sub OR using speaker wire from the receiver to the sub and then to the front speakers. Even the experts here on the forum seem to be divided. My thinking would be to use the sub cable, but there seems to be disagreement with that.

I think using the speaker level signals would send a full range signal to your fronts and sub, you would then use the xo in the sub to filter out the high freq. stuff from the sub. LFE and a coax cable would send only the low LFE signal to your sub and you would use the Yamaha to set the xo. For primarily HT I would go LFE and coax. Depending on the AVR you may not have use of the sub for stereo music playback this way but using the speaker level inputs on the sub would allow you to have the sub for 2 ch music.

apphd may be right...depending on what it says in that Polk Manual. The problem is that HTIB are not all of ONE design.

In any event for HT, the sub cable will suffice. Whether or not the Yamaha will allow you to use the sub in 2 channel or not...would be specified in the Yamaha manual. Most AVRs DO allow you to do this, I would 'assume' the Yamaha does as well. In any case those satellites in that Polk system are too small to run by themselves in 2 channel so you will need the sub.

I agree with cnh, HT (movie) is met to be used with the LFE. If you were more music then it would be a different story or if you were 50/50 HT & music, I would hook-up both. Don't let the Polk manual confuse you, simply follow the yamaha procedure to set your speakers, use the YAPO microphone to calibrate your system (make sure your speakers are strategically located) and you are in business. I originally started with the RM20 package with my yamaha HTR6080 and simply did the exact procedure I just explained to you with great success. As far as the sub, set it to approximately 12:00 Oclock (50%) as you don't want to overdrive it for best result. You can then adjust as you wish with that reference.

    Hope this helps!

I guess apphd has explained it in a simpler and therefore easier way to understand then I did!

Set it up, fire away and enjoy ;)

Matter of fact, you can select stereo mode on the yamaha for music listening.

Well, I used the sub cable for the hookup and have been very pleased and impressed so far. I realize coming from an older Panasonic HTIB kind of limits my comparative reference, but I've been more than happy with the bass output. As suggested by Technokid I have it about midway and even there it's quite solid. My wife and I were watching CSI this evening and were amazed at how full and clear the sound was.
