rewiring system

my current setup is as follows - cable in to cable box - componant and optical from cable box to receiver - hdmi from receiver to tv. Here's the twist, I'm also running an hdmi from cable box directly to tv. I've got it set up this way for a couple different reasons, 1- I was told that my receiver can upscale better than my tv, but hdmi doesn't upscale, only passes through. So by running the componant and optical to the receiver, it should be doing the upscaling instead of the tv. 2- by running a seperate hdmi from cable box to tv, I can watch tv without av gear on. I just change input selects in the tv. There's only 1 hdmi out on the cable box, and I like the option of being able to watch tv without the whole system on. Others here have suggested (on different threads) this is not the ideal setup. As much as I enjoy tinkering around with my system, I would like to get it wired permanantly for the best possible picture and sound. Any ideas on how to get the best performance from my setup with still having the option of tv use with avr off?

If it was me i would run the HDMI from the cable box to the receiver and the HDMI from the receiver to the TV. then run the componant cable from the cable box to the TV, you will also need to run audio out from the cable box to the TV as well. and dump the optical cable out of the mix.

Thanks for the feedback Larry, what would be a better alternative than the optical?
