SAN DIEGO -- Former Washington State University and NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in Texas.

Former WSU and San Diego Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf faces nine felony charges.

Leaf was indicted on seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance, and one count of burglary of habitation.

Leaf could get two-to-20 years behind bars if convicted of the burglary charge. Each of the other counts could carry up to a two-year sentence in state jail.

According to sources in Randall County, Leaf was in rehab for three months in Canada. They believe he is now working in Canada.

According to previous reports, Leaf was placed on indefinite leave from his coaching position at West Texas A&M in November after asking one of his players for a pain pill. Leaf claimed he needed the pill for a wrist injury from his professional days. A day after reports came out, Leaf resigned from his coaching position.

Leaf played at Washington State from 1995-97. In 1997, he led the Cougars to their first Rose Bowl appearance in 67 years. He also finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting that year.

Known as one of the NFL Draft's biggest busts, Leaf played professionally for the San Diego Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Dallas Cowboys. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2002, but retired before the season started.

I remember very clearly the sports talking heads discussing who should be the #1 draft pick the year he turned pro. Leaf or Peyton Manning. Quite a few said Leaf would be the better pro QB. Talking heads don't always know know as much as they think they do!

Leaf was worst draft choice ever by the San Diego Chargers and arguably one of the worst draft choices in the history of the NFL. What a waste of God-given talent. The dude had so much God-given to be a successful QB, but his attitude and laziness led him down the drain. Dude signed a huge contract and was out of professional football in several short years.

This guy was a joke. Can't believe he would throw away an opportunity that others only dream of.
