Trouble mounting rt28i with Omnimoint 20.5

I bought the Omnimount 20.5 speaker mount and am trying to mount a pair of Polk audio rt28i speakers to my wall. However, on the back of the speaker which is used for mounting, the Omnimount piece does not fit but only half of it. Has anyone had any experience with this? Should i buy a piece of wood and connect it to the speaker and then use that to mount it? What do you think?

I screwed mine directly into the back of my RTi28s. There's no way to properly mount them using the Powerport's keyhole mount.

I use the Omnimount 20.0 with some RTi4s ceiling mounted as my surrounds and the powerport keyhole - no drilling or **** anything into the cabinet.

I did have to go to my local hardware store to pick up 2 oversized washers and another nut that fits the threaded ball joint.

In effect - I created a 'sandwich' of washers and nuts with the keyhole in the middle and tightened the nuts down against each other.

Works great - all snug and tight - no problems.

No, it won't hurt the sound quality. The screws are fairly shallow.

Erik, my understanding is that Polk advises against using the keyhole to mount them that way, since the Powerport mounts are designed for wall mounting, not holding the entire weight of the speaker. If it's working for you, great... but I wouldn't trust it.

I drilled to smaller holes into the power port and used two screws and nuts to connect them to the Omnimount, it seems like it is holding them well. Thanks for the advice.

Just an update....according to a reply I got today from Polk Customer Service, the Powerport mounts are designed to hold the full weight of the speaker.

Back when I was going to buy the Omnimounts, I asked if I could do something similar to what you did, because I didn't want to have to screw into my speakers. The response I got back when I asked specifically about hanging them with the Omnimounts was not to hang them angled from the Powerport mount, because the plastic is designed only to withstand vertical wall mounting where there's no torsion on the mount. I was told that I had to screw it into the speaker for it to be secure, so I did.

But hey, like I said... if it works for you, cool. Personally, I'll take screwed into wood over mounted to plastic any day, especially 'cause mine are essentially hanging over my freakin' head. :)
