Speaker impedance

Hey guys. I have been hearing alot that the LSi 15's run off of 4 ohms. My Pioneer Elite VSX 92TXH has a setting for 6 or 8 ohms but not for 4.

What would be the best setting for the LSi15's.

Should I notice a big differnce with this switch or is more suttle.

I'll weigh in. Select the 6 amp. It is the lowest setting and ups the amps. Such settings are for current.

Caution: For a speaker that demands 4 amps, setting the current delivery to 6 amps (verses 4) means that the speaker will demand 1.5X the rated current push. It is not known if the stated amp can handle that, as the voltage provided must be more or less the same.

The problem is the LSi's dip lower than 4 ohms, a load your AVR isn't made to handle. This will result in a less than ideal performance from both your AVR and speakers. Depending on how much volume is applied this mis-match will cause the AVR to heat up and shut down.

It would be best to replace the AVR with one that is rated to handle 4 ohm loads or add a separate multi-channel power amp, if your AVR has pre outs.

The problem is when you set the Pioneer to 6 ohm it is actually limiting current in order to keep the component from getting to hot, even at 6 it cannot keep up with the current demand the LSi15 needs as a 4ohm (nominal) speaker design.

Sure the Pioneer will work and I bet it sounds pretty good and can play plenty loud, but its being stressed, look for a high current amplifier to add to the mix.

Not to de-rail this thread but do the sales people inform the customer what they are into? I do not shop in any audio stores and have not since the 70's so totally out of touch. I think you guys are going to say they just sell and could not care less what happens after the sale. If this is true even partly where does the Polk Audio sales and marketing come in? Just wondering out loud.

Yep. LSI's need an amp to run properly.

Ya hit it on the head.Not just with Polk,but many brands of speakers.Either they run not enough current to speakers and then blame the sound on the speaker maker,or they run mega watt amps into a kliptch speaker and moan about the cost,or can't hear a difference.Understanding the basics of what gear needs to function properly is too involving for some.They would much rather have a plug and play system...enter Bose,exit hi-fi.Look at how many times the question is asked here alone about powering LSI's with receivers.I guess it's a step up by them at least asking.Too bad most ask after they bought them,then cringe at the thought of having to shell out more cash for an amp.Live and learn I guess.

Thanks guys. I have heard a ton of times that I need a external power amp.
I guess I just need to bite the bullet and get one. Just thought I could attempt to "improve" the sound I have for now.

BTW - I tried it. Switched from 8 tp 6 omhs. No difference IMO. Didn't crank it but didn't feel the need.

Activily looking for a Carver TFM.

Simple, can not set the LSI to hear sing.
Amplifier 300 watts at 4 ohms is basic.

I purchased the Pioneer A/V Home Theater Receiver Model VSX-1018.So I would like to get a nice 5.1 speaker system. It seems most speaker systems are rated at 8 ohm input. My home came w/two ceiling speakers.
They are Sonance 634T. If I purchase a 5.1 speaker system rated at 8 ohm impedance to match my A/V receivers 8 ohm output what effect if any will it have on the two Sonance speakers? Any help would be much appreciated
