Fred 'Mister' Rogers Dies of Cancer at 74

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Fred Rogers, who gently invited millions of children to be his neighbor as host of the public television show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" for more than 30 years, has died of cancer. He was 74.

From 1968 to 2000, Rogers, an ordained Presbyterian minister, produced the show at Pittsburgh public television station WQED. The final new episode, which was taped in December 2000, aired in August 2001, though PBS affiliates continued to air back episodes

Very sad indeed. A great teacher of children. Polite, kind, and gentle.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Wife and I just read it on CNN.

An Icon in my opinion. He was a great man and a great teacher. No matter how much we all made fun of him (SNL, and general bullies in the school yard) he will be sorely missed on TV.

I remember getting up early in the mornings as a kid just to watch Sesame Street and Mr. Rodgers. He was the whole reason my sister and I begged my parents for a fish tank!

Farewell Mr. Rodgers! You'll always be my neighbor.

I never watched Mr. Rodgers since I was 15 when he came on the air. Everything I know says he was a good man and a positive influence on the little ones. We need more like him.

I remember getting plastered in college and cranking out Mr. Rogers songs (on vinyl) from my fourth floor dorm room out into the middle of the courtyard for students in 3 other dorms to listen to VERY LOUDLY. How would you like to wake up to "Won't you be.....my neighbor?" at 3:30 in the morning?

    AAAHHHH, those were the days.....

Like Shack, I was also too old to have watched in my youth, but did catch him often as my daughter was growing up.

Mr. R and Sesame Street... great double bill...
    More later,
    Tour...
