Not familiar with these at all or any of the newer JBL speakers. See lots of people looking for subs in this price range, so thought I would post to see if anyone here knows these subs. Looks like a good price for this but looks like a small volume box and output drops drastically from 35Hz down from what I could find, which wasn't much.
12" 400W rms 700W peak.

I've seen that around but never heard it. And where did you get the specs on 35hz....?
JBL 'claims' that sub has a 25hz at -3db low end. Of course realistically it might be 30hz, but 35hz? That doesn't seem right for a 40+ pound 400W RMS 12"? Other than that. I really can't say anything about the current line of JBL subs! Numbers seem OK?

Could be interesting but I am not too sure about their home products these days. JBL is still renowned for their proffesional gear but home product at that price worries me a bit!
By the way, does premium parts means NO Chinese cheap substitute ?

I wouldn't worry about the price too much. I've gotten most of my subs for around that price and they were all MSRP 499-599! Maybe a closeout...new JBL models on the way.
Here are your specs:
# Amplifier Power (RMS): 400 Watts
# Peak Dynamic Power: 700 Watts (the Peak Dynamic Power is measured by Recording the highest center-to-peak voltage measured across the Output of a resistive load equal to minimum impedance of the transducer, using a 50Hz sine wave burst, 3 cycles on, 17 cycles off)
# Low-Frequency Transducer: 12" (300mm) PolyPlas
# Inputs: Line-Level, LFE
# Low-Pass Frequency: Adjustable from 50Hz to 150Hz
# Frequency Response: 25Hz - Low-pass crossover setting
# Dimensions (H x W x D): 19-3/4" x 15-3/4" x 16-7/8" (502mm x 400mm x 428mm)
# Weight: 43 lb (19.5kg)
I wouldn't call that a small volume box! Medium volume perhaps. Pretty standard for this class sub.

Ive got a $200 JBL 12" sub I bought from JR.com. I think the deal was free shipping as well. I wanted a cheap sub to augment my R20s I got from Circuit City about 3 or 4 years ago for bedroom music duties (where most of my music listening occurs (get your mind out tha gutter - I aint that lucky!)).
I hate to drop some poor athlete interview lines, but "it is what it is" - and I got exactly what I expected. And I am very happy. I got a cheap sub that fills in the low end. No more no less. This is strickly a casual use speaker only.
In full disclosure I run Velodyne SPL 1200 II in the theatre room. Different tool for a different job.Do you hear that buzzing noise? -

Hey Monster.
You're right...but that Velodyne is in a very pricey sub class. So that's an apples and oranges comparison. Or perhaps grapes and oranges.
A class I'll never be able to afford--if I want to remain married! But that is a great SUB! What do you run as mains in there? I assume something equally costly....but good!

After looking closer I guess 30Hz might be closer to reality.Monster Jam wrote: »Ive got a $200 JBL 12" sub I bought from JR.com. I think the deal was free shipping as well. Yeh I know it's a $250 sub, but like I said I see a lot of people with that kind of a budget, and no matter how many people here tell them to save their money and do it once by getting a better sub, they are just stuck in this price range for what ever reason. We all have different budgets we are forced to work in. I stumbled across this and I've never heard or seen this sub before and was just wondering if this is another viable option for those folks. -
My buddy has some JBL 12" home subs and for HT they are decent. You want to cross them very low for music. 60 or less. They are a little noisy when you start going to 70-80hz, but for the $ they are not bad.Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

I have that sub. I used to run it in my upstairs system before replacing it with a Klipsch sub and later two DSW 600 Polks. It's a decent sub, especially for the price and actually performs pretty well for music. It lacks the low end extension I like for home theater apllications. For the price, it's not bad (I think I paid $350 for mine back about a year and half ago). I like the DSW Pro 600s much better for home theater and music, but again the JBL is not a bad sub for that price.
I also own a DSW Pro 400. I have seen these go for $350 sometimes. If it were me, I would pay the extra $100 bucks and pick a DSW Pro 400 or another $150 and get the DSW Pro 500. They are superior subs in every way to my JBl 12. That's just my opinion though. YMMV. -
I had that sub with a jbl set-up in my set-up until I upgraded to a psb set-up. I haven't missed that sub or set-up since. My psb digs much deeper, is much quicker and has better BOOM. Not to say that the JBL is bad by any stretch, but i think if you go the used route, you could get a much better sub.Shawn

I am not a big fan of JBL. Had a center channel years ago. It was okay but I have stayed away form JBL since.
My first sub was a Definitive Technology Prosub 100tl I got off of eBay for $200 shipped. My friend has it now and it still hammers hard and sounds great!Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t -
I've never used a JBL sub so I can't comment but I do one fairly large 3 way Monitors by JBL that are actually quite good (mid-80s design...titanium tweeters, 10" woofer, laminate 5" mid). 10" woofer has 6.5 pound magnet assembly (a monster) and can do some bass damage. So why is it that JBL subs don't cut it? I'm not disagreeing. But shouldn't a company that designs rock concert pro gear 'know' how to MAKE a great sub. Why don't they do that?

cnh,
I don't think its too far of a stretch to say that JBL knows how to make great speakers. Making "great" speakers (powered subwoofers in this case) at under $250 is a whole different challenge.
JBL is a brand with various product lines. Last I checked, it was owned by Harmon, which owns Harmon Kardan and Infinity. It could be a conscious decision by JBL not to pursue the higher end sub market. Its a matter of profit.Do you hear that buzzing noise? -
JBL's are awsome i have several.. i would def suggest it
