Lsi9s How many watts? Bookshelf system?

Hi,

I just replaced 2 of my 6 lsi9s with lsi15s, so I now have 2 spares that I want to make use of. I would like to use them in my office at work if possible, as part of a bookshelf system on my credenza.

I currently have an Onkyo bookshelf system there that is rated at 4 ohms, but the output at 4 ohms is only 20 watts. Does anyone think that will work?

Again, I am not looking to blast them, but I don't want to have to be 4 inches from the speakers to hear anything either...

You should look for something around 200wpc at 8ohm to make them sing as they should. Carvers are a great choice and can be had for reasonable prices. I have heard of others using tube amps to great results as well
The Gear... Carver "Statement" Mono-blocks, Mcintosh C2300 Arcam AVR20, Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player, Sony XBR70x850B 4k, Polk Audio Legend L800 with height modules, L400 Center Channel Polk audio AB800 "in-wall" surrounds. Marantz MM7025 stereo amp. Simaudio Moon 680d DSD

You'll be ok for low level listening.

+1. They obviously won't sound their best, but you already know that. Pretty good little office rig though.

Yeah as stated prev you should be good at low levels. I wouldnt get to crazy as you run the risk of damage to avr/speakers since its only rated 20wpc @ 4ohms

This may be the time to upgrade to the NAD C715. It would be a shame to let such nice speakers go to waste...

It's fair to say you'll need a more powerful amplifier. BUT, you do NOT need 200 wpc, what you do need is QUALITY power. I've said this many times before, I have a 38wpc int. tube amp that made my LSi9's sing far better than a 150wpc class d amp, or a typical 120wpc solid state amp. Now, let's say you find a high quality SS amp at 70wpc, I'll bet they'll do just fine.

    Used Amp recommendations:
    Jolida 1501
    Cambridge A640

The key will be speaker placement, as it sounds like they will be sitting on the credenza.

The last LSi 9 rig I heard used 1000 watt Threshold Mono-blocks with an ARC tubed pre, it did sound rather awesome.

The speakers that came with your Onkyo system were 4 Ohm also, like the LSi9's, and have even lower sensitivity (down around 83-85dB, I think). So your Polks will play louder. And considering your stated use, I think you'll be in good shape, volume-wise. Just don't try to push'em too hard!:) Besides, even 20W will get you around 100dB of peak output at one meter. I'd think that would be way plenty in most office environments. But now, for office parties all bets are off!
