Sorry to post about a movie this old, but I watched it for the first time this weekend, and all i have to say is WOW.
I knew I was in for some heavy hits based on comments from other guys around here...but the sheer amount and depth of bass throughout the movie blew my socks off!
And even though there wasn't much shown of outside the sub, when the movie went into sub-view for diving, the sound stage for going under the water was spot on. Made me want to go grab a snorkel!

I've always used depth charges for demo. It's fun to see folk who've really never experienced a good HT get "blown out of the water" by them.;)
I've also really liked the gun battle towards the end of Open Range. Obviously not for the sub but excellent sound effects. -
Wow old, is it in color?

Master and Commander is not as good for sound as U-571 is. I have seen both movies several times... U-571 hits you in the nuts, hard, Master and Commander just tickles themPolkFest 2012, who's going>?

As much as I love the sound in U-571, I gotta' disagree. Master And Commander's cannon sequences are some of the most dynamic, deep-trolling, hit you in the chest bits of audio nirvana you'll ever find.Equipment list:

Ok.. i'll give you that much.. but the "filler" part of the movie in between battles, is BORING!
to few battles for me.. they should have added at least one or two more battle scenes.. then I would have liked the movie more.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Indeed, U-571's DTS surround mix on the standard DVD's "Collector's Edition" was a first-rate effort by Universal -- it's STILL, all these years later, a go-to disc for me to show what a subwoofer can really do. This track, during the depth charge sequences, rattled my PSW10 in three different systems so badly, it actually made it bottom out a few times, requiring me to really go back and take it a few notches down on the calibration level...the track delivers monstrous bass during those scenes.
The other title that rivals U-571 in the audio department, on standard DVD, is the 1999 remake of The Haunting, which, on its "Signature Selection" version includes a DTS-ES 6.1 track that is absolutely RELENTLESS with sub-bass; when the banging on the walls of Hill House begin, you better make sure your sub's calibration level isn't too hot -- the LFE on this track is unreal.:eek::eek:
But I also enjoyed U-571 as a film, as well, and thought Jonathan Mostow was on a roll after he followed this up with Terminator 3...
I haven't had the chance to sample U-571 on Blu-ray yet because I enjoy the standard DVD and its wild DTS mix. -

U571 to this day is my reference movie bass sub test disk. Not many Subs can Depth charge. I have only found a few out of the thousands I have Installed.
I have owned this movie for years, played it many times and only watched the movie once. It's a pure test tool.

Thanks for the reminder from me as well. I have seen U571 several times and always enjoyed it and appreciated the soundtrack in DTS. Now that I have downsized my system (still have that Atlantic Technology THX350 setup in storage) and went from 8.1 back to 5.1 :-( for a different house I will have to try it again.
And I have never seen Master & Commander, so will add that to my list to see.
Another movie I thought had a good soundtrack was the DTS Collector's Edition of Jurassic Park - I could feel the footsteps of the T-Rex -

Yes, Gregg -- do yourself a favor and rewatch U-571! AWESOME DTS soundtrack, even in 5.1 (well, which it was recorded in, anyway)...
And yes, I totally agree about JURASSIC PARK in Universal's DTS edition -- the ONLY way to watch that title. That DVD was one of the first I bought when first getting into the home theater hobby, based on the legend that followed it around enthusiast corners; I do recall, however, Universal putting out "bum" DTS edition discs of this title which came with a "flawed" LFE track. I received one of those first pressings of the title, and there was indeed a lack of bass on the track. I sent the disc back to Universal, as they were offering exchanges back then due to the mastering errors on these first pressings, and received the "correct" disc. If you are buying this for the first time online somewhere (they're out of print now), make sure you get the version with the "corrected" LFE track -- there is a code that is printed on the disc hub which indicates which version is correct; I don't recall what that code is now, but you can look that up, too.
The LFE on Jurassic Park in DTS is wall-shattering. Also check out the bass on Jurassic Park III, also in DTS -- UNREAL amounts of sub-LFE.:eek: -
I haven't watched this (in Superbit) since setting up my first HTIB years ago, but even then, I was impressed with the depth charges. I must watch it again on my new system. U-571 LFE is amazing!Testing

In the U.S., U-571 was not available as a "Superbit," as those were only for Columbia/Sony releases; U-571 is a Universal release. It was also available for a short time on the short-lived "D-VHS" format, which I heard looked and sounded fantastic, perhaps better than the DVD... -
Sorry for the confusion, I meant Das Boot in Superbit not U-571.Testing
