The hip thing I was worried about too. What should I look for?

Prevention is the key. Try not having them jump too much; ie, into truck beds, out of truck beds, etc---high jumping on hard surfaces. This can go a long way to prevent hip-displacia. Also keep him well exercised, labs need to run; the more muscular they are, the less likely they have problems later---or at least the severity will be greatly reduced.

Shepherd/labs are awesome. Here's my little Abby when we got her. She's just about 3 now and the best dog you could ask for. Great companion dog.
Oh and you asked about water. When we go to my buds cabin, we can't keep her out of the lake. In fact, when we go out on the boat she'll jump out when she see's the dock so she can swim the rest of the way.

I would not worry too much about it. If it happens it happens. Life is too short too worry about what if's. You can have bad hips in almost all large dog breeds and little dogs can be trappled on.

I agree. When we pick up our Old English Sheepdog "puppy" (7 months old and 70 lbs), we had him checked with a vet. If he develops hip problem later in his life, then we will just have to deal with it at that time. In the meantime, he's having a good time at home keeping company with my mom (who has mild Alzheimers).

Just remember all puppies are devils as puppies. They chew on everything. Remember that there is always a alpha dog and sometime it's the canine that is alpha. Bad Bad Bad. All dogs are pack animal and need a alpha presence. I have AKC English Setters if you are wondering. Have fun and enjoy.

That's the little guy I picked. He was napping by the time I took a pic because I went back but when I was there earlier he was active and as sweet as can be.

My Rat Terriers were awesome puppies. They didn't chew on anything, didn't cry and were housebroken quickly. I may have been spoiled by them.

Does that mean you ALREADY HAVE a new puppy?

Someone is giving away free puppies that are German Shepherd/Yellow Lab mixes. I have always wanted a Shepherd but I am open to a mutt. Is this a good combo? The price is right.
The pics are a little shaky because they were taken with the iPhone and those little buggers would not sit still. :D

I do not think that you can go wrong with this mix setup! The pups will likely inherent the best of smarts and disposition from either breed. I've seen them, they are phenominal dogs ... kind of like from "Ole Yeller" fame. They bond very well to the family and are beyond good with children (& very tolerant with a child's way with doting on a big dog).

If you get one, expect to buy dog chow by the dry 50# bag. They've got an appitite! (same for the amount of turds on the back end of the mutt).

I was so sad yesterday about my Dexter and my roommate encouraged me to see if any puppies were still available. Reluctantly, I called and she still had a male available. I don't know how it happened but here he is. In my house, eating my food and drinking my beer :)

My Dexter would have liked him. He's a very good boy.

OMG What a handful Harlan is!!!! I never had to work this hard with my Rat Terriers.

He wants to be Alpha dog for sure. He likes to play bite which has improved a lot BUT he was starting to growl bite! I have had to put him into submission a few times. Once should have done it. Is this because he's 8 weeks? Should I be worried?

He already sits and walks well on the leash. He is having multiple accidents but does go when he's outside so it's mostly when I take my eyes off of him (my fault). Any big smart willful dog owner advice?

My Moose is a Lab/Border Collie mix. I caged trained him and when he did something wrong gave (give) him a strong semi-loud NO! That stops him in his tracks and let's him know not to do it again.

When our Jack Russell was a puppy I would get right down in her face as she was eating. The rationale was that most dogs become aggressive around food, so when we had children I wanted her to be used to it. Also, if we were playing and she would bite, I would have a toy in hand. Once her mouth opened on my hand I would say "no" sternly and put the toy in her mouth. My parents used the same trick with their lab, but used a nylabone instead of a toy.

For potty training, I would feed her twice a day and right after take her outside and praise wen she did her business. Then took her out every hour it was possible or crate her if we were gone.

Harlan looks adorable; looks like he might be a BIG boy. I am sure he can't replace Dexter, but he can help ease the sting and find a new place in your heart.

    Take care,
    Shawn

Darla, great that you decided to get the puppy.

Crate training works wonders for potty training. There's a great, short book that is very helpful for general puppy training. I followed "some" of the recommendations and Chico our dog is a very well behaved dog.

Not available from Amazon anymore, but several sellers that have it. For less than 10 bucks well worth it.

+1 on crate training. We had great luck with training our shep/lab with that method. "Puppys For Dummy's" is also a very good and helpful book.
