The lugs were probably on, just barely hand tight. It wouldn't have made it that far with no lugs at all.

You know what? Something gives me the feeling this was sabotage, like someone (maybe his competitors) loosened his lug nuts...

Right, what are the chances all four wheels fall off?

He probably drove to the track on a different set of wheels/tires.

I'd think that if the lug nuts were loose, he'd notice them a LONG time ago?

That vid lasted for quite a while before they came off.

Hard to tell, but what style/type of racing was supposed to be going on here ? Some sort of time-trial slalom, or ..... ?

Reason I ask is, the guy probably was at some point sitting over where the cars are parked along the side, waiting to get in line. At some point those lugs were loosened or, at best, not tightened.

Once your sitting behind the wheel, I have to believe you're going to notice lugs coming off the wheel.

So .... how the heck DOES that happen ?

No. Especially if he did not drive to track on those wheels and tires. I know I never beat up my street rubber on the track. I always brought a set of slicks, even if they were beat up, or drag radials. Thankfully the tech guys would always make sure to remind you to check the lugs.

    and

Not really. He wasn't moving that long and when the wheels did come off, he had just made his first turn. Most of the rest of the movement was in a straight line. Besides, he wasn't very smooth in his transitions either so it's hard to tell if he did notice anything.

As far as the kind of racing, SCCA Autocross. A big parking lot with a bunch of cones laid out to make a race course. Each car races solo against the clock. Best time wins the meet.

OK, for those who have never been in the situation of prepping for a race and making sure you're registered, tech'ed and such, you won't ever understand what goes on and how much goes in to it. It is easy to forget to tighten lug nuts or close a fuel tank or even forget to fill up the tank and other stuff you would think is a no-brainer. Just because you think it's not possible doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I highly, HIGHLY doubt that was sabotage. The proximity of other people in the environment makes that really stupid and a quick way to meet your opponents wrath and not to mention the back seat of a patrol vehicle from a local constabulary.

If he did not drive to the track on those wheels and tires, then it is possible. However, there's more to the story...

What do you mean "What do you notice?" What I notice is that the first wheel to fall off, the studs were all there. The second wheel that fell off sheared 4 out of 5 studs off. The other two wheels, I can't see well enough. That kind of damage pattern is typical of improperly tightened lug nuts. Either too tight or not tight enough. What I also notice is that all 4 wheels are racing slicks and I KNOW he couldn't have driven to the track like that. He'd have no tires left for his track day.

What are you gettin' at? What do you think you see that others more experienced than you don't?

It wasn't sabotage. It was somebody who changed wheels at the track and didn't tighten the lug nuts properly. That could mean anything from having lug nuts on finger tight to having the wheels torqued to something like 70 ft lb when they should have been at 105 ft lb or something. The only reason they are looking for a missing bolt/nut is not for evidence but rather so nobody picks it up with a tire and causes an unsafe condition that can damage a tire/wheel and/or cause harm to a driver or spectator. Usually this is just one wheels to fall off but the colossal lapse of judgment it takes for all 4 wheels to fall off is astounding but not outside the realm of possibilities. Especially if he put cold wheels on a hot hub and torqued the bolts. You get an improper torque level on the bolts and they should get rechecked before driving. Obviously this guy didn't do that and his lug nuts worked themselves loose. Judging by his driving, he wasn't THAT experienced at the whole auto cross thing either.
